Darcy had thought about it a lot and, after a little too much consideration, she'd decided that she really shouldn't have left things the way she did with Preston. She liked the guy, which for her was actually a miracle, and yet she'd still ended up fleeing at the first sign of danger, despite the fact that danger was the exact kind of thing that she got a high off. But, then again, the danger didn't usually materialize itself as her own brother. She liked Preston a little too much to write him off like that, however, and so had quickly ended up throwing him a text inviting him to the cafe (she'd thought abut other places, but the park was too open, her family were banned from the rental store for misunderstanding the word 'rental' to mean 'free stuff', and the mall was the kind of place she only went to when she had an unhealthy urge to pickpocket. Besides, she kind of owed him a drink). Now, all that remained was waiting to see if he'd turn up, part of her wondering whether she'd been so rude that he'd decided to have nothing to do with her ever again... It wouldn't be the first time that had happened.

Preston was honestly glad that he'd finally heard from Darcy, and the fact that she was asking to meet up again made him feel much better about whatever had happened the last time they were together. It meant he probably hadn't messed anything up, and even if he had, it wasn't bad enough that she never wanted to speak with him again. Luckily, Preston hadn't had any plans, so he didn't have to turn Darcy's offer down.
He drove to the café possibly a little faster than he should have, but what could he say? He was a little bit anxious. Once there, he found a place to park and walked into the café to find Darcy. He smiled when he spotted her, then proceeded to sit down in the chair across from her. "Hey," he greeted her.

"You actually showed up, I'm kind of surprised," Darcy spoke up as he sat down, flashing him her signature smile as she crossed one leg over the other, leaning forward on the table slightly as she carefully stirred the drink in front of her. "No offense, I mean, my usual crowd would probably show up with a baseball bat and a bad attitude if I'd have been so rude to them... Let's just say I'm not used to people actually being nice." She shrugged her shoulder's lightly, meaning nothing by it, she just tended to talk a lot when she was nervous (and when she wasn't, but she lived in a perpetual denial about that).

Preston raised an eyebrow at her, then he smiled a little. "Actually, I think I was more worried than anything," he said. "I didn't know if I'd done something or what had happened." Preston looked at the drink she was stirring for a moment before looking back at her, hoping that she might explain what had caused her to leave so abruptly last time. But maybe she'd just leave him in suspense. It wouldn't have surprised him, honestly. She had a mystery factor about her, that was for sure, but Preston didn't mind it.

"Aw, that's cute, but don't worry - it wasn't you, it was me." 'Wow, way to go with the cliches,' she thought to herself, mentally scolding herself for managing to say one of the most cliche breakup lines of the century, and they weren't even breaking up, so how did that make any sense at all? It wasn't even exactly true either. It wasn't so much her as her brother, or, at least, her slight fear of him combined with the want to keep Preston, who seemed like a genuinely nice guy, out of trouble. And yet she didn't quite know how to explain that to him. She shouldn't even be here, by even talking to him she was potentially putting him at risk, and yet she couldn't resist the thrill of it (either that or she just couldn't resist him, but that was yet another thing she was in denial about). Biting her lip as she continued to stir the drink in front of her, she looked at him, finally asking, "you're Preston Miller, right? Preston Miller with the big family, the brother that was just in a car crash and the friend who's currently in a tricky situation because their family may or may not be hunters, and they may or may not be human?"

Preston's eyes widened a little, surprised at just how much she knew about his life. "You've really done your research," he said, sounding a bit more standoffish than he had before. He wasn't sure how or why Darcy knew so much about him, and he was a little freaked out by honestly. But he'd hear her out, since he knew that making assumptions was never a good idea, and Darcy didn't seem like she was planning on doing anything bad. She actually seemed like she wanted him not to be who he was, which was odd. "Though, I'll skip the part where I ask how you found out all of that and just ask what it is you're getting at by asking?" Preston was nervous for her answer, but he had to know now.

"That, uh, that was really fucking creepy, wasn't it?" Darcy replied, already mentally scolding herself for being so abrasive. There were a million ways that she could've phrased that better, and yet the words seemed to just tumble out of her mouth before she could really stop them, and before she knew it she just sounded like a borderline stalker that clearly wasn't afraid to show it. Only she wasn't. Pulling away from the table slightly, her hands dropped to her lap, nervously drumming against her thighs as she quickly continued, "I'm really, really sorry. It's, well, it's not exactly me that did the research. My brother did." There was a pause, as if she expected him to know what that meant, even if the gap was only so she could try and figure out the right words to phrase it considering they were in a cafe surrounded by people. "He's kind of an exterminator, if you will... He likes to think he rids the world of pests like, y'know, lizards, foxes, wolves..." She trailed off, hoping that he'd understood what she meant and hadn't already written her off as a complete loon.

Preston bit his lip, trying to decide how he wanted to react to this news. "Oh," was all that he could think to say at first. Her brother was a hunter. Just my luck, he thought. Did that mean she was a hunter too? He'd always thought that hunters were families, but maybe this was different. She wouldn't tell him that he was being hunted if she was going to be hunting him as well, right?
But then Preston remembered why he'd come there to begin with. "So that explains why you ran off the other day," he said. "You saw my name." He was more thinking out loud than speaking to her. He looked down at his fingers for a moment, which were intertwined together on the table. "Your brother wants to kill me...awesome..." he said quietly.

"I'm sorry," Darcy replied quietly, her voice meek as she leaned over the table once again, reaching over and resting her hand on top of his, squeezing them lightly as she tried her best to be comforting, something she wasn't particularly accustomed to. Apologizing wasn't exactly something she was used to. In fact, she honestly couldn't remember the last time she'd sorry to anyone but Preston and actually meant it. Most of the time, she was only really sorry that she got caught doing whatever it was she was meant to be apologising for. Preston brought out a slightly kinder side of her, it seemed. "If it helps, I only freaked because I figured me even thinking about you would give him a reason to make you a target. He's one of the ones that sticks to the code like it's religion, and I figured you weren't the type to have ever killed someone innocent, so you should be fine. I just -" she paused, biting her lip for a minute as she tried to figure out her next sentence, "- I didn't want to risk him changing his mind and making you a priority just because I like you a little too much." She pulled her hand away from his then, resting it back on her side of the table.

Preston sighed, taking a moment to think about the whole situation. It wasn't really that big of a deal, right? Preston was friends with Kylie, and her parents were hunters. Heck, his sister was dating one of the hunters whose family tried to kill him. His circle of friends was full of them. But something about this felt different, and Preston couldn't tell why. "I guess that's a little more reassuring," he said. "But what about you? I mean, aren't hunters usually families?" Being friends, or whatever he and Darcy where, with a hunter might have been a little more risky. Then again, maybe it was safer. Preston had never killed anyone, and he didn't ever plan on doing so, so he was in the clear, right?

"I used to, but then I discovered I do actually have a conscience, and whilst I don't think werewolves are exactly natural, I also think that by killing one, you're also killing a person." She offered him a small smile, not sure if that was really the answer he wanted or expected, but also deciding that she may as well tell the truth, even if it had gotten her in a lot of trouble in the past. "I mean," she paused, fingers automatically going to stir the drink in front of her - she had a habit of fiddling with things when she was nervous, "I don't care much for being thief... Big companies make enough money as it is, so who cares if they lose a few dollars over a bracelet? But, I don't think I could ever live with myself if I took someone's like, supernatural creature or not. After all, people are who they are, so who am I to judge? Besides, I'm adopted, so I don't really see the family tie." She shrugged her shoulders lightly, trying not to make a big deal out of it.

Preston nodded. "I see," he said. He took another moment or so, thinking about the whole thing, but then he decided not to make a big deal out of it. Like she'd said, her brother stuck to the code, so he had nothing to worry about. "Well, thanks for telling me," he said. "But I don't think it should that much of an issue, right?" Preston raised an eyebrow at her, hoping for her approval as well. She obviously knew her brother better than Preston did, so she would probably know if it was going to be an actual issue or not.

"I know, I just -" Darcy paused, thinking for a minute as she tried to think of an adequate reply. What did she say to that? Why had she actually freaked out the way she did? God forbid, could she actually like this guy? No. That was impossible. She'd banned herself from having friends a long time ago, deicing that the life she lived was a lot easier if the only friends she made were the type of people that would probably sell you out for their next fix. Preston wasn't like that. He wasn't a sell out, and right now that was proving a problem. Pulling herself out of her thoughts, she finally settled on an answer, deciding it was about as close to the truth as she could get. "I just didn't want you to get hurt and, yes, I know you could probably handle yourself... You just don't know my brother... Let's just say he's not the type of person you invite to a party unless you want police involvement by the end of the night..."

Preston nodded. "I see," he said. "Well thank you for telling me, I really do appreciate it. I guess it's better to know and be prepared." Even if her brother was a hunter, Preston had to admit that it was nice to have a friend that he didn't have to constantly lie to. He had Lia and Kylie, sure, but Kylie had plenty of her own problems when it came to being a werewolf, and Lia wasn't the best person to talk to about that kind of thing. "So, I have to ask, did you guys really move here because of a crazy ex-girlfriend, then? I don't want to accuse you of lying or anything, I'm just curious."

"Very much true," Darcy confessed, offering Preston a cheeky grin, admittedly very entertained by the memory, "you see, turns out this girlfriend of Griffin's wasn't a massive fan of the fact he'd decided their relationship was very much open, and that he'd decided to - uh - procreate with every other blonde haired bimbo in town," she explained with a shrug, remembering the night with an unusual amount of clarification. It was probably due to the fact it was kind of an important event, but she didn't care. "Let's just say that he has a habit of picking the emotionally unstable girls that just so happen to have chainsaw or flame thrower licenses." Suffice to say, that last time it happened certainly wasn't' the first, and Darcy had been chased around a small town by a variety of potentially life threatening objects. Hell, she was fairly sure one of them turned up with the head of a vacuum cleaner once. Raising an eyebrow at Preston, she decided to finally added, "why? Are you trying to tell me that you've never been brutally attacked by an angry eighteen year old wielding the type of things you see used in horror films?" she asked, a certain teasing in her voice that suggested she knew it wasn't exactly common, even if she liked to act like it was.
