Load. Aim. Shoot. Don't hesitate. Those words repeated over and over in Xavier's head as he practiced with his crossbow. His father had always told him that he had a natural talent when it came to hunting, but, of course, that wasn't surprising considering that both of his parents' families had been hunters for generations now. But Xavier didn't like to get cocky about his abilities. He was always trying to be better. Nothing was ever good enough unless it was perfection. He would spend hours shooting at the same spot on the same tree until he felt like he was perfect, and then he would move on to the next target.
And that was just what Xavier had spent all day doing. The tension in his family was high, considering the sudden influx of hunters in Beacon Hills, and the potential for a war was becoming more and more real. The idea scared Xavier. He would have to chose a side. His family, or the girl he loved. But he didn't think about that now. Now was the time to prepare to fight, even if he didn't know which side he would actually be fighting for.
Just as Xavier was about to make another shot, he heard a noise, and he spun around to see where it came from. He kept his crossbow ready instinctively, then called out, "Who's there?" It was probably just an animal or something, but you could never be too careful, in Xavier's opinion.

Lottie's head had been in the clouds recently, which had left her quieter and more of an outsider then usual, if that was even possible. It had meant she'd been too distracted to even think about designing or making anything, so she had come to the preserve in hope of finding some inspiration. Her sketch book was in her bag, which hit lightly against her thigh with every step she took. Instead of getting inspiration, though, she'd got distracted again, the calm and open environment making it too easy for her. She'd managed to get lost- not that she really minded at the moment, but the sound of someone's voice broke her from her trance and she panicked for a moment before realising she'd probably just startled them. She took a step forward, so she could be seen by the boy "I-" She started to apologise, before noticing the loaded cross bow in his hand and freezing.

Xavier lowered his crossbow when he locked eyes with the girl. "I'm so sorry," he said, almost smiling a little. "I just wasn't expecting to see anyone out here." He recognized the girl from school, though he'd never actually formally met her. Meeting with a crossbow pointed at her probably wasn't the best first impression, but Xavier had never been very good at those anyways. He was just hoping the girl wouldn't think he was some kind of serial killer now.

Once he'd put down his bow, Lottie breathed a sigh of relief. The last thing she really needed was to get shot by some psychopath with a bow, but he seemed to just be practising and not actually intent on killing anything. She vaguely recognised him from somewhere, and considering his age that was from school. "Um, it's okay... I'm sorry for interrupting" She said, taking a step away from him despite being pretty far already.

Xavier shook his head. "No, it's fine," he said. "I was just about to finish, actually. I didn't mean to frighten you." Xavier wasn't actually about to finish, but he'd been out there for almost four hours, so he figured it was okay to call it a day. Xavier packed his stuff into a duffle bag and slung it over his shoulder.
"I don't suppose that almost shooting you with a crossbow is the best way to make an impression," he said with a slight chuckle. "But either way, I'm Xavier, and I promise that I'm not some kind of psycho, just a guy with a knack for hunting." Xavier hoped that maybe he could turn this situation around, but he wasn't sure if that would go very well.

Lottie actually smiled slightly at him, shaking her head lightly as she did so "It's not the best way, but i've probably made worst first impressions before. I'm Lottie and i'll take your word for that" She told him. Glancing around she tried her best to work out where she was, but she wasn't very familiar, and by not very familiar she meant she was completely lost. "Uhm, so i'm kind of lost and it would be amazing if you could help me out of here..." She trailed off. She hated asking for help, but if she didn't who knew how long she'd be out here for.

Xavier was about to ask what she was doing out there when she told him she was lost. "Oh yeah, totally," he said. "I've spent more time in these woods than anyone probably should, so I know it like the back of my hand." He started walking, assuming that she would follow him. "So, how'd you find yourself out here?" Xavier never really ran into anyone out there, so this was a rare occasion.

Lottie offered him a grateful smile, glad he'd be willing to take her back without making fun of her for getting lost. She'd decided recently that maybe she should start being friendlier, as nearly 3 years practically by yourself couldn't be good for you mentally and she'd have to start talking to people anyway as she grew up, or there was no where she'd get anywhere in life. She began following him through the woods, suddenly realising this could be a bit of a stupid idea considering she only vaguely knew him and he had a killer weapon in his bag. It was a bit late to turn back now, though, and he seemed nice enough. "Oh, um, i was just trying to clear my head really" She told him with a shrug.

Xavier nodded. "It's a good place for that, I suppose," he said. He wasn't sure why, but this girl seemed like the kind of person who could use someone to talk to. Maybe it was the fact that she'd manage to wander into a forest and then get lost, but it didn't really matter. Xavier was the kind of person who was god to vent to, since he was better at listening than anything else. "Though, I'd recommend learning your way around before wandering about again." He wasn't meaning to lecture her or anything, he was really just joking.

Lottie nodded slowly, walking along with him at a matched pace. Her bag hitting against her leg again was something she found oddly calming but couldn't work out why, just the consistent drum of it probably. "Yeah, i should probably do that" She agreed, glancing over at him as she did. She couldn't actually work out if that was meant to be jokey or not, but it was true none the less.

Xavier kept walking silently for a moment, but it felt awkward to not be having a conversation with the girl. "So Lottie, you go to Beacon Hills, right?" he asked, just to make sure that he actually did recognize her from school. He couldn't really tell how old she was. She could have been anywhere from a year or two younger than him to a few years older, so he wasn't sure. It didn't really matter that much, but it seemed like a good way to start a conversation.

"Yeah" Lottie replied, looking over at him as she did so "Are you?" She asked, sure she recognised him from somewhere but just couldn't really work out where. She was pretty sure it was school, but she could be wrong and there was no harm in asking. He looked a bit older, but that was kind of common round here- a lot of the people in school looked like they could pass for 20.
