acting silly. she’s still very young and bright. she likes to think she brings joy to those around her. the history mother • gemma, 38, elementary school teacherfather • harry, 40, tech developer siblings • leon, 18, student overall history • willow is the second born to harry and gemma pratt, an incredibly resilient little sister to leon. wolverhampton is a city northwest of birmingham, a far cry from london, but it was home. she didn’t know what it was like to be alone. willow had grown up in leon’s arms and under the careful hands and teachings of her parents. they fostered her charisma, planting seeds that bloomed as kindness and sunshine and love. troublesome, yes. the second child always was, but she had a pure heart behind her teasing and jokes. where her brother was meek, willow was outspoken. she would lead him around with a firm grip on his hand, always a few steps ahead but refusing to go anywhere without him. when leon entered primary school and was bullied for his relationship with her, willow didn’t understand. she didn’t like that he would shy away from her affection when they were out of the home, but didn’t know how to verbalize what she was feeling because he would always be multitudes more hands-on when they were within the house. it wasn’t until she entered school herself two years later that she began to understand. willow was never the target of any teasing, but she saw it happen. after the taunting got worse when she’d butted in between leon and some awful boys, willow had learned to stay out of it. eventually they found a balance. leon carried less of a burden as he found art and sports and willow branched out of her little pratt-oriented bubble. she was very charismatic and liked by her peers, quickly becoming the favored student by teachers and popular among her classmates. when willow was eight, she fell off her bike and scraped her knee devastatingly. blood was pouring from her open wound and leon, who had been playing in the yard near where she was riding on the sidewalk, ran over to help her. leon was notoriously known to be squeamish, he did not mix well with the sight of blood, but willow’s cries overwhelmed the squirming of his stomach and he picked her up in his arms and ran back to the house. his eyes were closed, knowing if he opened them they were both done for. willow had to tell him where to turn and where to step. when he set her down in the kitchen for his mom to tend to her, he opened his eyes and promptly fainted at the crimson painting his shirt and dripping down his arms. willow knew then that leon was her knight in shining armor, her hero. a year later, willow became enamored with the piano. her parents enrolled her in lessons and she quickly became affluent in the instrument. they tried to encourage her to learn others, but she wasn’t interested. in school, willow didn’t excel, but she did pass her classes. she was no genius like her brother, but settled in just beneath the top students. her focus was often away from the teachings on the board, instead vested in a group of girls she had befriended or in the fawning of a boy. when she was thirteen, she saw a posture promoting the school play. willow hadn’t previously yearned for the spotlight, but now that the idea had been placed in her head, she couldn’t shake it. she had always had a flair for the dramatics and could weasel up a good lie, always incredible at giving a performance to convince her parents to let her stay at a friend’s house a little longer. it had been romeo and juliet, a classic. she wanted the starring role and she got it. shortly after, willow and the boy who played romeo started dating. they were young and it was nothing more than holding hands at school and a few timid kisses, but willow was convinced she was in love. cal was a very sweet boy, he never asked for anything more than what she gave. being the star of the show and being one of the only girls to have a boyfriend, brought her a lot of attention. willow liked it, liked being popular. that’s what made the move to america so hard. just as she finished her school year, her parents sat her and leon down and explained that they were moving to california for work. leon hadn’t taken it as roughly as willow. he was losing friends and a partner the same as she was, but he’d never fit in here. not the way willow did. the idea of losing all she’d known was a truly horrific thought. she was resistant to pack, fighting with her parents tooth and nail as they carefully folded her belongings into boxes. the goodbyes were hard and the promises to keep in touch were flimsy. the shift in willow’s character was visceral. the once lovely and friendly girl had become poignant and bitter. her style shifted from bright, pastel, and girly to dark, dull, and moody. her hair was often down and in her face, trying her best to stay hidden from the curious eyes. she didn’t want to be there and she made that clear. she began skipping classes, something she would have never dreamed of doing before. she’d had a run-in with a boy named erik when she’d stumbled upon his hiding spot beneath the bleachers. the two didn’t get along. maybe they would have before, but she’d been cruel and cold towards his attempts at conversation. she’d left him hanging mid sentence, drained from the short interaction. a week or so later, she ran off from the house, not able to stand being around her parents on the weekend, and found herself in the preserve. the large forested area had been welcoming, its tangled arms opened wide and swallowing her whole. she shouldn’t have been surprised when she’d gotten lost. a blonde girl creeping out from the foliage had petrified her, the distrust instant and her body on guard. it was silly, she knew, but she’d grown so opposed to interaction that having one now when she had nowhere else to go felt so scary. but speaking with lottie and having to work together to get out of the woods with the help of the girl’s map had restored something in willow she hadn’t expected to ever return. she was resistant and a little reluctant, but once they managed to find their way out and lottie offered to meet with her at school, willow agreed. she ruminated over it, fear coiling tight in her stomach at the prospect of actually befriending someone here. she didn’t want to. she didn’t want to crumble so quickly, to cave in on her desire to prove her parents wrong. but it was lonely. leon had made a friend in a girl named rose and was spending time with her. willow didn’t have much of anyone or anything here and she couldn’t take it anymore. that following monday, willow found herself sat at an empty table awaiting lottie and a girl named jamie to join her. she had never been one to get nervous before, but watching the pair walk up to her had her hands trembling. she’d been resilient to communication for months now, but with the girls it felt easy. not long after becoming the third wheel to the lottie and jamie show, willow found herself crouched down in the video store in town picking up some dvd cases that a girl had dropped. sophie, like willow, had a love for movies. where leon had fallen for the animation of disney, willow had always been enamored by the stars on screen. it meshed well with their passions—drawing and acting. the two bonded, the conversation coming easier now that willow had lightened up some. it was easy to integrate sophie into their group. they quickly dubbed themselves the “lonely hearts club”. it felt right. her relationship with leon was smoother too. he would walk her to her classes and spend the evenings with her alternating watching disney and rom-com films. things were getting better. as christmas rolled around, willow found herself in the mall shopping for christmas gifts. it was there that eva found her, sidling up beside her and offering guidance in which presents to pick after willow expressed distress. willow had blinked owlishly up at her, something inside clicking into place. she had always found girls pretty, eyes lingering a little too long on their smiles and hips. she’d fooled herself into thinking that she was admiring them, that maybe it was out of yearning to look like that. with eva before her now, so bold and obvious with her intentions, willow couldn’t lie to herself anymore. for a while, she was scared. she’d seek out eva and spend time with her when her friends and brother were busy, making slow progress but still keeping the girl a secret. it felt wrong to hide her, but willow needed time to process these new feelings. she spent the weekend before christmas with her friends, sleeping over at lottie’s house and binging christmas movies much to jamie’s distaste. willow wasn’t sure what to do when leon explained that he wasn’t speaking to rose anymore shortly after the winter dance. she was worried, leon had been so invested in the girl that it didn’t make sense for them to stop hanging out. leon wouldn’t tell her anything, though. she grew to suspect that maybe he had feelings for the girl, but after hearing some chattering from people sophie used to hang out with, she learned that he’d been pushed away from her by others. bullying felt too strong of a word, especially given what he’d been through before, but it hurt knowing nonetheless. she tried to be there for him, but leon had taken a page from her book and turned cold to those around him. just after the new year began, eva kissed willow. it was passionate, but over too quickly. they shared a few more over the next few weeks before eva was gone. willow didn’t know what happened to her, but she’d left town with her family without a word. willow was heartbroken, distancing herself from her girls for some time. but they were there for her when she was ready, not probing despite their curiosity. she was grateful for them, finding comfort in their open arms. their bonds only strengthened as time pushed on. she cut her wild mane of curly hair to her shoulders, needing the change. she’s kept it that way ever since. willow and sophie were a grade below lottie and jamie. as their freshman year ended, the older girls completed their sophomore. summer had been filled with adventures. swimming in jamie’s pool and sleepovers at willow’s and trips in lottie’s car. willow was thankful for leon making a friend of a boy named cooper who helped him find his way in beacon hills again, but her brother was still distant with her. she didn’t take it personally and kept trying to reconnect. it wasn’t long after the beginning of the next school year that willow realized she liked jamie. not friend-liked, like-liked. she had romantic feelings for one of her best friends and she knew she couldn’t tell anyone about it. she didn’t know if jamie was into girls or guys or both like willow was. their group didn’t often drool over guys, boys were never a frequent subject matter unless they were complaining about how dumb they were. willow wasn’t going to take the risk, so she yearned for her friend in silence, careful to never do anything to jeopardize the relationship. it was better to have her as a friend than not at all. the fall of her sophomore year, willow was enrolled in an elective theater class. it was a taste of home, and with the confidence she’d lost upon the move back in place, she auditioned for the school play with her newly polished skillset. she didn’t get the lead, wanting to work back into the swing of things, but stole the show all the same. her girls cheered her on in the crowd. jamie had put up a fuss about being in a room of annoying teens, but it was just a front. she was the only one that went to every single one of willow’s shows. it didn’t help willow’s crush. winter break was spent the same as the year before, surrounded by her friends and celebrating with her family. it was after they got back to school that rose cornered leon—it had been a year since he’d spoken to her. with rose back in the picture, leon became more involved in willow’s life. he would drive her around because willow was still too young to drive on her own and kick her ass in board games. it was nice. everything was falling back into place. spring was spent alternating her time between her girls and her brother and his friends. cooper was entertaining, but too pessimistic for willow’s taste. she’d find an excuse to leave his presence after an hour or so. but rose, willow couldn’t help to be drawn to the girl. she was like the big sister she never had, but more than that, willow learned that leon had feelings for her. she couldn’t help but be a meddling little sister, dropping small hints that rose never picked up on. they got along well, but didn’t spend much time alone together. she starred in the last show before the year ended, and again, it was jamie in the crowd she spotted every time. rose and leon watched two of the three nights. summer was blistering, but it wasn’t the sun that stung willow so badly. sophie left. they got a text before their numbers were blocked. she’d gone off to follow the gold’s, who willow knew she’d been staying with. another person lost. it hurt worse than eva, because willow suddenly felt like the odd man out. she was younger than the other two and they’d been so close before she came around. sophie had been hers and she wasn’t quite sure how to handle the imbalance. lottie and jamie tried to not single her out, jamie more than lottie. the blonde had a lot on her plate and seemed to be busy outside of the friendship. she’d gotten a job and was worried about her brother. jamie seemed to be spending more and more time with a sour boy named murphy. willow was never around when the two were together, with murphy always leaving as soon as he spotted her. jamie was more frequent to the party seen than willow and lottie and it seems that her and the boy had grown close over a drink or two. willow had never actually gone to any party ever, she wondered what would happen if she got tipsy with jamie. the fear of stepping over boundaries kept her from asking to join. it felt like her little group of friends was falling apart. however, they’d made time for a road trip. they’d visited the coast, spending a day on the beach before camping in a national park a little more north. willow would never speak aloud what it meant to cuddle up next to jamie in that tent. when they got home, nothing was the same. an officer had been killed by a wild animal. it was worrisome, but willow was more intrigued by how fearful people were because of it. from her understanding, the animal had been killed already. she was more cautious going out at night regardless. just before the end of july, she met adam. he was going to be a senior that year, older than her brother but so handsome. he had a car and treated her so nice. willow welcomed the distraction. leon had become so involved with rose and jamie with murphy and lottie with her family struggles, willow just wanted to feel wanted. she wanted to feel special. he’d kissed her at her front door after their first date. with the start of her junior year, jamie and lottie’s senior year, willow realized that she needed to do something about her feelings for her friend. it was getting harder and harder to watch her and murphy together. she wouldn’t ask about him, couldn’t stomach the idea of what jamie would tell her. it was mid-september, not long after charlie carper was attacked and killed by a wolf and another girl had been chased, but was mostly unharmed, that leon become more hands on with willow, worried about her safety. she insisted she she had her boyfriend now to keep an eye on her. leon didn't like that answer, his distrust of the boy clear. adam was a gentleman for the first months of dating, but as the end of october neared, he began to grow more insistent that she did more for him. willow resisted, but didn’t know how long she could say no. she didn’t want to upset her boyfriend and struggled to reach out to those closest to her knowing they all had so much on their own plates. she persisted, however. her sparkle didn’t dull, she wouldn’t let that happen. in the chilly evening air, willow stood with her sign held high and adam’s hands low on her hips. she cheered for her brother from the stands, clueless to the cruelties that would soon be coming her way. the visuals a two-story, ranch-style home in the heart of beacon hills suburbs. it is a fairly modest home. four rooms, two bathrooms, a warm living room and generous kitchen. they have a large back-yard with a garden his mother tends to. leon, willow, and his parents live upstairs while the her basket is often filled with flowers she picks up on her way. outfits • where she was often unpredictable elsewhere, willow is almost always found in soft pinks or pastel colors. she leans towards
