Things you don't expect: 1. To be walking home from school and then have someone shout at you to run because did you not hear the news? 2. Having to actually look up the news (who even has the time for that?) 3. Realising that holy shit, zombies are real now??
Rose was still trying to wrap her head around the situation, hands still shaking as she finally reached her front door. All around her doors were being bolted shut and pieces of wood were being plastered across windows. Three weeks later and everything had changed for one thing Rose was no longer at home, she was miles away worried about her family and her friends, trying to find some way to contact them but knowing it was probably futile. The only things Rose had with her were shoved into the bag on her back and they included the bare essentials which she thought she'd need until she met up with Natalia and Alex but they were meant to meet up to weeks ago and Rose was growing more and more desperate. What if they had been turned? What if they were dead? What if the whole world was dead because Rose hadn't seen another living person in two days.
Perhaps the most helpful thing Rose had with her was a map with the journey she was supposed to take drawn onto it. She'd overshot her final destination by quite some way and had tried backtracking but had only wound up becoming more and more lost. Where the hell even was she? Some field somewhere. There were no road signs anywhere nearby but then again she was nowhere near a road. Maybe that's what she should aim for? Which was to go though, every which way she turned she was just met by more fields although to the left of her there were some mountains rising up in the distance just as the sun was starting to sink. Rose decided to go right, pulling her bag straps back up to the tops of her shoulders and pulling a piece of grass out from between her fingers.
Four hours later and the sun had truly set and the night had arrived but most of all Rose was starving, she needed food and she needed it fast because she was starting to feel dizzy and it can only go downhill from there. On a positive though, she'd reached a road about a half hour before and was following it's tarmacked path hopefully to salvation or food or both. Thing about the night though is that it's dark and things can jump out at you so when a cat ran out in front of her Rose yelped, the sound of her small scream echoing around her. "Fuck," she whispered, eyes flashing as she quickly spun around in a circle praying she couldn't see anything moving about. No, she couldn't see anything moving about but was that a building? It had to be. Kicking her feet into a run, the tarmac before her flashed by before her feet started covering dryer land and then there was the building before her. No lights were on and she could hear no sounds from inside. It had to be empty.
Pushing the door open as gently as she could, Rose slipped inside, not yet dropping her bag to the ground in case she had to make yet another run for it but so far no one had come to see about any sound. Rose though, bless her, had a habit of speaking/thinking too soon because no sooner had she started to relax and let her guard down just a spec did she hear someone approaching from another room of the house. At least she hoped it was a someone. Better safe than sorry though, two feet away from her was a book on a table and Rose snatched it up, holding it behind her ready to throw it if she had to. Hopefully she wouldn't have to.

A zombie apocalypse deffiently isn't something you think will actually happen until it actually does happen. Sure, you might joke about it with friends, or have weird dreams about being in one, or maybe you would think about what it'd be like to be in one during a very boring lesson, but you never thought you would genuinely experience one, or anything close to one.
But here Iris was, trapped in a dystopian movie- apart from it wasn't a movie and it was actually her life and it was actually hell on earth. It's safe to say that when Iris had woken up one morning she hadn't expected to be thrown into a world where zombies existed, but she hadn't really had a choice in the matter, and 2 days after the apocalypse began she'd been forced to abandoned everything she knew and take to the road instead. The first day of the epidemic her father hadn't come home from work, and they'd had to assume the worst. Her and her mum pack bags and locked themselves in their home, mourning and hoping they'd be safe there, at least for a while. Luck wasn't on their side. It really didn't take long for zombies to break into their home, and turn her mother. Iris barely made it out of the house with her backpack, fathers gun, and a baseball bat.
It had been 3 weeks since the day she'd lost everything she knew, and now she had no idea where she was. She'd been travelling almost non-stop, mainly hiding and trying to avoid all danger and best as she could, and so far she'd been doing a pretty good job. She had completely run out of food, though, and only had about half a bottle of water left, so she knew she needed to find something to stock up with, and quick, or she just wasn't going to survive the week.
Night was falling again, and Iris was trying to find somewhere to sleep. She was in the middle of no where, open fields surrounding her, so she knew it'd probably be quite easy find a ditch or something to sleep in, but she decided to look for something better before she settled for a ditch. That's when she found it. A house.
I looked completely empty, but Iris still approached it cautiously, expecting something to jump out at her at any second. The door was unlocked, probably from when the previous owner left and, for whatever reason, didn't lock the door after them, and it seemed pretty empty inside, too. After a quick search of the house Iris found no one, so she decided she'd stay here for the night, at least, though it could be a bit risky. She left the lights off, just incase, and was quick to fill up her water and raid the cupboards for whatever food was left. It seemed the previous occupier had been turned, as there was still a lot left, which also meant no one else had found the house yet, which put her at ease again. After eating and drinking for a while she went to find a hidden place to sleep, since the bed, or though inviting, was way to obvious, and anyone else who found the house would be sure to check there. Soon she was settled down in a little cupbpard thing, pillows making it softer for her.
She was about to drift off when she heard a noise down stairs. She froze, unsure of whether to hide or investigate. It took a minute or so, but she decided she'd rather have the upper hand in the situation and shock them, rather then them shocking her (which they'd sort of already done, but they didn't have to know that). She moved carefully back down the stairs, gun gripped tightly between her hands, pointing in front of her at whatever might jump out. To be quite honest, even she knew a grun wasn't the most ideal weapon, but it was that or the baseball bat, and she figured the gun was probably more intimidating. Not that she would shoot a human. She could do with a companion.
Once she'd reached the room she heard the noise from, she froze. That wasn't what she'd been expecting. A small girl, about Iris' age that looked about as tired, hungry and scruffy as Iris probably did stood there, staring back at her. The only difference was Iris had a gun and the other girl had a book. After a moment of silence, Iris finally spoke "I think i'm going to win this fight, don't you?" Her tone was lightly, but the words could be seen as threatening, depending on how you took them. Despite her words she desperately wanted to lower her gun, knowing there was no way she could shoot someone as harmless looking as the girl in front of her, but she didn't want to be the one to lower her weapon first.

The effort it took for Rose to keep her hand from shaking was laughable. Here was the girl who knew how to hit a bullseye from 20 feet away struggling to not drop the book from the level of fear that was radiating off of her. This was ridiculous and something she knew Alex would laugh at when she told him because it wasn't going to be an 'if' she found him it was when, it had to be.The book she had in her hand had to be a good 400 pages long and was a fancy hardback too, like the type her grandmother had. That was something Rose had lost - both of her grandparents had, upon hearing about the apocalypse, decided to take some toxic pill or something and had died together and died human. Rose was beginning to think that that was the most important thing- dying with someone and doing it human.
The person that emerged surprised Rose, she'd been expecting someone but that someone hadn't been a girl her own age. Interesting. The silence between them as they took in each other was palpable and Rose shifted her weight slightly. "That depends- I've got a pretty good aim." Rose replied, looking at he girl squarely in the face. Still, Rose lowered the book to her side, she was not about to die at the hands of some girl holding a gun- actually that was a good point, "do you want to lower the gun?" Rose suggested knowing that the best thing to do here was to not be too serious or intense. This was the first person Rose had seen in a while and she didn't want to scare her off or be forced to leave and find some tree to sleep under.
So far though, for the few seconds she'd been around the girl Rose knew that she wasn't about to be kicked out- the girl still had a conscience or at least Rose hoped she did.

Iris was going to retaliate, but the words got stuck in her throat, not that she even knew what she'd been planning to say in the first place. Still, before she had a chance to actually sort out what was going on between her mind and mouth the other girl had lowered her weapon, if you could even call it that, and was asking Iris to do the same. She hesitated for a moment, afraid that if she did lower her gun the girl would still throw the book at her face, or something. It was the kind of book that looked like it could do some damage if it had enough power behind it. Kind of added a whole new meaning to 'words are weapons' for Iris.
After a second she did lower the gun, but kept a firm grip on it, just in case. If she was honest, she hardly knew how to use the gun, and even if she didn't she knew she probably wouldn't have the courage to do so- not on someone living anyway. Questions rushed round the girls mind, and she wasn't sure which one to ask first, so she just let one fall out of her mouth and waited to see what it was. "Why are you here?" Eh, decent question. It could have been better, could have been worse, but at least she didn't make herself look like an idiot.

Ah, good a weapon was no longer being pointed directly at her face. Rose wondered for a moment as to where the girl got it from- maybe she'd found it around here and maybe there were other weapons that Rose could use to defend herself with. So far on her travels she'd d found one gun but it had been empty and so Rose had left it where it was, no point in carrying around extra weight that wouldn't be useful immediately.
"I needed somewhere to sleep and find some food." Rose told her quickly pushing one hand through her hair which was mainly just one big knot now and in serious need of a good condition but this was a zombie apocalypse the time for vanity had passed somewhat. "Why are you here?" Rose could only guess that this wasn't her house, otherwise she'd probably have locked the door or at least secured it in some way. Actually what was the name of this girl? "What's your name?" Rose added after a beat, teeth flicking over her bottom lip. Her eyes had adjusted to the dark in the room and so she could see the girl much easier now- very blue eyes by the looks of it.

At girls words Iris' glanced over the other girls shoulder, since that was where she knew the kitchen was located. Iris had made sure there was no lights on in the house, since she wanted a minimal amount of interest in the building while she was there, so it was understandable that the new girl might not have spotted the kitchen in the few minutes she'd been there, since it wasn't lit and she'd spent the majority of her time with a gun pointed at her head. She looked back at the girl, taking in more of her appearance as her eyes adjusted to the lack of light. Iris was taller then the stranger, but she figured they were about the same age. The girl's hair needed was really in need of some tlc, but then again so did Iris', and everyone else on the planet who was still alive.
"Same as you" Iris replied, tucking her gun back into the make shift holster she'd made for it, as she's decided it wasn't needed in this situation. "I'm Iris, you?" She asked, awkwardly fiddling with a bit of her hair as she waited for the other girls reply.

Wait, where was she looking now? Did she have some friend lurking in that room ready to come and attack her? Rose's mind would quickly go into overdrive if she thought about this too long and that would just confuse her and put her on edge. Still, the idea of what was that way was one Rose wanted to know- and soon.
With the gun's removal (okay, not removal but it was no longer being pointed at Rose which was a plus) Rose could breathe a small sigh of relief. This girl didn't want her dead... yet. "Rose." She replied rubbing a hand against the back of her neck, trying to ease a knot of tension forming there. "What's in that room?" She asked next, head jutting to where Iris had looked back at a few moments before. If she was going to sleep here (if Iris let her that is), Rose wanted to know what was in all the rooms around her, lest there be a trap to come and bite her in the ass.

Was there a point to not telling the girl? Not one she could think of- if Iris didn't tell her she was sure she'd find out soon enough. "It's the kitchen" She said, taking a step towards the girl and the room. She paused for a moment, thinking about what to do next. She decided she may as well just let the girl get on with it- if she was honestly, Iris was starting to think of the possibility of maybe travelling with her for a little bit. She knew she'd only met the girl, what? 10 minutes ago? But she'd been out of company for so long now, when she finally came across someone of her own age she was automatically drawn to them. She wondered if the feeling was mutual.
"Take what you need. There's some bottles of water in the fridge, and other bits and pieces, so" Iris trailed off, slipping her gun into the holster she'd brought with her.

The kitchen? As in food and water and... knives? Okay maybe that last thought was a bit of a shot in the dark, after all if you had to flee someplace in the state of an emergency like a zombie apocalypse, wouldn't you arm yourself with whatever you had on hand? Rose took a step towards the kitchen, waited a couple of seconds to see if something suddenly jumped out at her and when she'd concluded that no, nothing in here was going to attack her (other than her own sense of doubt that was),she continued to the the kitchen.
Stepping into the kitchen Rose went to the fridge first, pulling open the door and grabbing a bottle of water before shutting the fridge's door and uncapping the water bottle. She had been struggling to drink enough on her travels and managed to down about half of the water bottle in two minutes. Resealing the precious water, Rose began pulling open the cupboards, taking a packet of biscuits and a couple of cans of soup. Rose didn't want to overstep her boundaries though so only took the kind of things she'd need to get her through a couple of days of travel. She didn't want to stick around in one place for too long, after all her family needed her. "So, how long have you been here for?" Maybe Iris was off travelling somewhere, maybe Rose and Iris could travel together for a bit. Everything was still on the maybe side of things though, in the kind of situation the world was in now, Rose knew better than to start throwing her trust at people.
