Ashton couldn’t keep his eyes from rolling, tumbling in a circle in a show of dramatics at her insistence. He knew for a fact that he had been standing in the way as he contemplated what to do and she hadn’t been paying attention when she’d stumbled into him. They were both at fault, but technically she was the one who made contact first and therefore the one to blame. He’d go back to the mall and get the damn footage if he needed to. He didn’t like to lose, no matter how petty and small the battle was. But he let it go for now, dropping the topic with a lazy drawl, “You keep thinking that, Princess.” There was a soft curl to his lips, his cockiness dissipated as his eyes followed the slopes and curves of her pretty face. He didn’t know what it was about her, and as much as it scared him that she made him feel, he couldn’t stay away from her. He knew she wouldn’t say no to the date, but he was still so relieved she’d agreed. He had to figure her out. He had to get close to her and not just to piss Erin off. He liked Jade. Ashton has never liked anyone. He was confused and worried and so badly didn’t want to fuck up but he knew he would. He was in new territory, but he had to do this. He would like to blame his parents’ death, wanted to say that he was just looking to fill the hole that they had left gaping in his chest, but he couldn’t. He didn’t want to belittle Jade to a lousy excuse. She was something sweet and kind and special and so far out of his league. She deserved more than what he’d inevitably do to her. But Ashton didn’t care. He was a dick who got what he wanted and despite knowing he would hurt her in some way, he hoped the fact that he didn’t want to would make up for when he did.
“As long as you can admit you’ve fallen for me, I don’t care how it was done,” he chuckled, eyes soft and smile bright–beaming down at her as he leaned into her side after she’d linked her arm with his. He wanted to hold her, wrap her up in his arms and keep her safe from the dangers out there–keep her safe from him. She was a light in the dark and he wanted to hoard her, hide her from all others. He would deprive the world of her glimmering flame to keep it for himself. Ashton wasn’t afraid to admit he was selfish, but he was terrified about the hold she had on him and he hadn’t even had a taste of her.
As her voice rang out with the location of her class, he accepted he was definitely going to be late to History and Jensen would chastise him for it. The cousins shared two classes and sat beside one another in both–which meant when Ashton waltzed into the room long after the bell rang, the disgruntled eyes of students and teacher alike would follow him right to where his cousin was glaring at him. Oh well. Pretty girl needs an escort. He followed her lead and headed towards the double doors as the rest of the students in the cafeteria started to filter out.
Eyes turned their way, sizing up the girl on Ashton’s arm in jealousy. Since arriving, he’d grown a small fanbase. Girls were drawn to his charm and looks, wanting a piece of him but he hadn’t found himself in between any of their legs. He hadn’t wanted to. Again, he wanted to blame his parents’ death and not the girl at his side.
“I think you’re going to love what I have in mind,” he said as they made their way through the crowded halls, eyes falling to hers as he led them along. A plan was slowly forming in his mind, putting much more thought into this than he would have had she been anyone else. In reality, this could be seen as his first honest date. Yeah, he’d taken girls out before, but only for the purpose of getting in their skirts–not because he wanted to worm his way into their heart and hook himself there. She made him feel warm and safe and wanted him for more than just his body. He liked the way she made him feel about himself and liked when she laughed and liked when she blushed. He liked Jade. He didn’t want to fuck up.
But this was Ashton. He was bound to one way or another.
