A chuckle fell from Jensen’s lips at her comment, shoulders bobbing in a half-hearted shrug as he nodded along. It was true. He doubted Anne would be bothered that he didn’t call her mom. Truth was, she probably didn’t want it. She had a son of her own who’d up and left a good while ago- he wasn’t sure to where, but it had seemed like maybe military. As far as he knew, the man was still alive, but he couldn’t be sure. He didn’t ask for details like that- just overheard what his father and she talked about in between shifts while he was finishing up his own food, trying not to eavesdrop. Ashton would have. He would have lapped up any gossip that came his way that possibly ended with someone getting laid, but Jensen was more respectable than that. If he was meant to know, he would be told. Simple as that. It was how his mother raised him, not she followed through with her advice, but still. The message still stands.
“You’re probably right about that,” he replied with a small grin, eyes lifting from the menu to peek at her- and God, what a sight she was. He still couldn’t wrap his head around the fact that she was sitting here, with him of all people. He knew he wasn’t a bad guy and was attractive enough, but he couldn’t understand why someone like her chose someone like him. Simple, little Jensen. Raised on the outskirts of town by a drunk and a woman who held her leashes too tight. Someone who was controlled by the moon. Worked as a bag boy and studied hard. Didn’t have too many friends because he’d never seen the light of being popular. Someone who was maybe, possibly, probably going to fall so hard for a girl so far out of his league and he couldn’t even be sorry for it. If he got the chance- just the chance to maybe leave an impression on Iris, then maybe he’d be okay with whatever happened afterwards. He’d never wanted to be something big. He just wanted to mean something to someone. That’s all he could ask for.
His lips pulled back into an even larger grin than before at her statement because wasn’t that just perfect? The few girls he’d taken out on dates before had been all about impressing him. Not wanting to eat much because it made them self-conscious, and he couldn’t stand that- that they thought he was really that shallow. So when Iris said ‘screw it all, I’m going to eat unhealthy and you can’t stop me’ (not in those words, obviously, but that’s how Jensen computed it), he couldn’t help but rejoice. Finally. Even if it was only one order of fries, at least she was eating.
With his eyes still roaming her face, he shook his head again and smirked, laughing softly as he glanced back down at the menu and teased, “If you get them, I’m warning you now- you’ll have to share.” Straightening his shoulders and sitting up straight, he laid the menu back down on the table and winked at her, taunting ever so slightly. He was notorious for sneaking food off of other people’s plates. Him and Ashton both.
