Luck was never something on his side- like, ever. Not when it came to his family. His father silently spited him, putting up a good front to make their interactions more bearable but the tension was still high. His mother had fallen ill, the doctors scrambling to figure out what exactly is causing her to drop weight like it’s nothing and sleep for hours and hours on end- though they promise it’s not deadly, but he isn’t too sure. His brother had spent the last few months avoiding him, throwing some fit about him not being home as much- pout and all, the man acted like a four year old, at best. God, his sister was what he was forced to hunt, a monster and consequently closed off to nearly all. Not when it came to relationships- but that one was pretty given. It’s not like he hadn’t tried to move on, because he did. There was Jessica first, a witty blonde with a wicked smile and just dumb enough to fall for a guy like Sam- things ended with a sigh, her not willing to waste time waiting for his heart to be in it. Katie, Sandy, and Ruby had all been short flings, about a month or so each, but all ended in the same mess- he just wouldn’t ever love them the way they needed, the way he so desperately wanted because he couldn’t spend the rest of his life pining after a childish school-day crush. Now there was Genevieve, but he still wasn’t quite too sure where they stood. The water was murky between them, the interest there, but never acted on (if you don’t count that one drunken kiss the week after she’d weaseled her way into coming home with him for the summer). They were friends, lingering on the edge of more, but he wasn’t too sure if things would go any further with Natalia lurking just around the block- he just wasn’t that lucky. Not when it came to friendship, either. He’d never had a boat load of friends, just a few loyal dweebs back in high school. Now he had a lingering crowd of students at his feet, not quite friends but still welcomed themselves in his home for a beer. The two people he did get stuck with to call his ‘best’ friends were the ever taunting Gabriel, always ribbing him and stealing his food, and then Misha- god, Misha was just, just odd. There were no other words for the man. They were possibly the weirdest, most obnoxious bunch, but what could he do? He was stuck with them- Gabe since third grade when he kicked sand into some guy’s face after he’d spent half of recess yanking on Sam’s hair, offering him a hand up and then never letting go, and Misha since freshman year at Stanford, a roommate that just never moved out. Once the two met, Sam simply gave up ever trying to be normal.
And he certainly didn’t have luck today. No, see, Sam- all six foot, four and a half inches of him- was chasing through the park after his dog. He’d had Sadie for nearly a year- having managed to move into a dog friendly apartment and juggle caring for her with keeping his grades up. He loved her to pieces, but right now? Well, right now he was reconsidering why he ever thought it was a good idea to get the mutt in the first place. It was supposed to be a simple walk. Gen was going to meet him in the park after she’d done some shopping and then they’d head into town to maybe go bowling or rent a movie, but Sadie didn’t seem to agree with those plans. She’d bolted the minute they had stepped on the grass, catching Sam off guard and darting through the park towards the small pond in the corner- leaving the giant of a man, gangly limbs and his general clumsiness, to tumble after her.
It must’ve been a sight to see.
He’d just barely caught her before she bounded into the water, a whimper filling the air as she dug at the shoreline, wanting so desperately to dive in- but Sam wasn’t relenting. Tightening his grip on the leash, he led her away from the pond and ran a hand through his hair. He glanced around, tilting his head downwards to hide the deep tint to his cheeks as he hurried off, but then again why would it have been that easy. Sadie yanked on the leash again, aiming to chase a squirrel and effectively tossing all his attention on keeping her at his side- making him oblivious to his surroundings and sending him right into a person walking past.
God, just his luck.
Eyes widened slightly, his hand caught on the crook of their elbow to steady them, an apology falling off his lips swiftly, his gaze never find theirs (more so out of embarrassment than anything), “Oh god, I am so sorry. She just started pulling and I was trying to keep her from running again and I wasn’t looking and I just- today is not my day,” finally raising his eyes and offering them a sheepish smile, he asked in a soft tone, “I didn’t hurt you, did I?” A man his size running into anyone almost always promised some damage, but he hoped that it wasn’t bad- he couldn’t take much more of this bad mojo.

What was there to say about Alex Harper? Lets start at high school. He was the kid to make jokes in the back of the classroom, mouth of the teacher and then call them sweetheart to avoid getting detention. It was possible he was prettier than both of his sisters and (perhaps unfortunately) he knew it which was why back in high school he'd made out with many a person, most of them girls some of them not. Perhaps due to his joke-ster nature he'd never excelled at school despite the fact that he had the brain power to get into college and a good college at that. Reputation had been the key though- staying on top. He and Natalia had thrived at that, neither had been ashamed of it either. After all, why be embarrassed by the fact that you had adoring fans in the form of your fellow students.
Now though, he'd grown up, or at least matured a bit. After he'd graduated he, like Natalia, had gone travelling and indeed they traveled together for a while and then would part ways to reconnect in a new place a month or so later. During his time alone he'd come to terms, truly come to terms with who he was and the fact that although the light post beside him may be straight, he definitely wasn't. Sure he liked girls, like them a lot but the there was the other end of the spectrum, the male end and he liked that too. He was fine with that now. 18 year old him had been slightly more hesitant about it.
A couple of years ago though he'd met a girl, Stephanie, when visiting Los Angeles just before a trip back home. They'd hit it off and although nothing happened between them immediately they became friends until one day she came to visit him and then they were definitely more than friends. They'd had a healthy relationship, never officially dating, always being friends no matter what until just over a year ago she'd broken contact with him; nothing he could do would get through to her. Until a month ago she told him she needed to see him on a specific day and that was a week away, Alex was nervous about seeing her after so long. He'd spent a lot of drunken nights hugging a bottle to his chest in place of her. So yes, he had had feelings for her.
To clear his head, prepare himself for seeing her soon, he'd taken a walk in the park. Normally he'd head to the woods but the presence of other people was what he really wanted and the park was a place where people went, right? He hadn't been there for more than a few minutes when he saw another guy, he was as tall if not taller than Alex himself, chasing after a dog. Yikes, sucks to be him.
A little while later it didn't suck to be the guy so much as Alex who had just been crashed into while stopping to reply to a message Rose had just sent him. Caught off guard, Alex had stumbled but the guy was there to stable him. Oh hey, Alex knew him! "Styles, hey, don't freak, don't sweat." Alex told him taking a step away to glance up and down Sam, he hadn't seen him a while. They'd never been friends really but they'd spoken before, mainly in science when Alex needed to pretend to not know the answer so would ask Sam. "Nah, you didn't hurt me. I'm not the much littler than you." Grinning, Alex now wondered why Sam had crashed into him.
"Wait, were you- are you the guy with the runaway dog?!" He was laughing, he couldn't help it.

Fantastic. Of course this would be who he ran into, the icing on the cake. It wasn’t that he didn’t like Alex, but more so to deal with the fact that Sam had a raging crush on his twin sister and he wasn’t the best at keeping his mouth shut when he was nervous. This was kind of like his worst nightmare- not counting the one with midget clowns chasing him, he still shivers at just the thought. Spilling his heart out to a guy he’d always pegged as insensitive when it came to others, well, he just really hoped he had a better lock on his tongue than that.
Stealing his hands back from where they’d been gripping Alex’s forearms to steady the slightly shorter male, he shoved one through his hair to try to tame the wind-blown locks, his bangs glued to his forehead with sweat from chasing after Sadie, and his other tightened its grip on the dog’s leash, not trusting the mutt to not take off and embarrass him further.
Nodding along with Alex’s attempts at calming his nerves, Sam caught his breath and took a step back, tugging his dog closer to his side as she growled at a passing squirrel. But his nerves didn’t exactly stay calm for too long, for he was converted back to a blushing and blabbering mess as Alex broke into a fit of laughter. Great, now he’d never live this down. Alex was probably going to run back home and tell Natalia all about what a dork and klutz same is- if she even ever talks about him, that is. Maybe he doesn’t make a big debut in the Harper household and this will just be kept under wraps. He couldn’t help be conflicted on that front. Have Natalia gush (okay, she would never do that, but it sounds like heaven in his head) about him to her family, or to have her oblivious to his existence and this never be mentioned ever.
Both seemed like decent, but destructive options. Sam would just never win.
Rubbing his palm against the back of his neck out of an anxious habit, Sam just nodded, trying to make a joke out of it rather than make an even bigger fool out of himself by stuttering- it wasn’t like him and Alex were close, he was just a kid who copied his work when he was too lazy to do it himself and the twin to the love of his life teenage crush.
“Yeah, yeah- laugh it up,” he said with a small smile, trying to go for a nonchalant angle, “But you try to keep hold of her and not end up on your face.” To prove his point, Sadie pulled hard, edging to get the squirrel taunting her from the tree beside them, and Sam just barely kept her in check. She was still a puppy, a big one at that, and stocked to the brim with energy. He’d like to see someone try to keep her in check when there were furry tailed rodents anywhere in the vicinity.

Alex was watching the dog with mild interest, Sam seemed to be struggling in controlling her. Ah well, the heart wants what it wants and clearly what that dog's heart wanted was a squirrel. Alex had tried squirrel once, hadn't thought much of it, he probably couldn't tell a dog that though, could he?
Tuning back into Sam, Alex hoped he hadn't upset the guy. He was smiling though and that was always a good sign. "Oh, is that a challenge?" Alex replied, laughter stopping and his usual lazy grin returning to his face as he shoved his hands into the pockets of his coat. Clearly the dog had a mind of her own because Sam was really struggling and Alex was aware of Sam enough to know that he was relatively strong (not to mention the fact that he was the living embodiment of the BFG). "What's the dogs name?" Alex asked drawing a hand out of his hand, considering stroking the pooch. In truth, Alex had always wanted a pet but all he'd ever had was a couple of goldfish when he was twelve. Long story short he'd forgotten to feed them and they'd died, proving to his parents that he was in no way capable of handling any kind of furry creature. Maybe Alex could just blame that on how we was raised because come on you train a young boy to hunt creatures thereby killing them and then expect him to be able to suddenly care for a creature. That logic didn't really add up in Alex's head.

Sam couldn’t stop the harsh chuckle from falling from his lips, the veins bulging in his forearms as he finally managed to get his dog to settle down- to the best of her abilities, the squirrel having darted out of sight and making the pooch huff almost disgruntledly at its loss, nose falling to the ground to sniff out a scent of something else she could attack. “I’d say yeah, but I’d rather not have to chase after her she finds a way out of your hold,” experience let him know that was a bad idea, Sam had to hunt his dog down in the thick of the woods behind his house after Teddy had tried to take her out for a walk. Squirrels, birds, lizards- if she heard a crunch or squeal, she was off like a rocket. All puppy energy, no wit. Big heart though, as energetic and jumpy as she was, Sadie was nothing but a big baby in need of a little (little is the wrong word, she demanded attention twenty-four/seven, darned thing was like a clingy girlfriend) love. He’d set the palm not gripping her leash tightly on her back, patting her softly and the touch had her nosing at his hand for a moment before becoming disinterested and searching out for a new scent- probably where some other dog had marked his territory. Animals are just weird.
Turning his attention back to Alex, a fond smile crossed his lips, eyes gone soft and god was he a big softy or what? “Sadie, I got her from the pound I volunteer at near Stanford,” Alex didn’t ask that, but boy did Sam love sharing the story, “They were gonna put her down because of her energy levels, and I just couldn’t let that happen- I took her home.” His gaze batted down to the man’s outstretched hand, slightly hesitant but willing, and he just laughed, “Go ahead, pet her- she doesn’t bite,” he smirked, a mischievous glint in his eyes as he tacked on, “Often.”

"I bet though, that if that were the case. I'd catch her first." This was just Alex's way of communicating with people, little bit like a 7 year old in a school yard, a little bit like the popular guy sat behind you kicking your chair but overall he was smoothed out over the edges with his charismatic grins and 'no hard feelings'. He wasn't a bad guy, could just probably do with a bit more growing up. It seemed that in his family Natalia had all the mature, self-preservation genes and Alex and Rose had been left with what she'd left behind in the 'how to grow up' department. These days though, even Rose was getting her shit together and paying attention to everything around her. If you asked Alex (which obviously you wouldn't because why would he know the answer - he did know the answer though, always had, hopefully always would) he'd tell you that her sudden boost in maturity was to do with Liam and honestly Alex had no idea what was going on with his little sister and her boyfriend but he was well aware that he wasn't around these days and that she'd stopped speaking about him. Maybe they'd broken up, maybe Alex didn't want to know.
"Oh- wow, that's cool. I mean, if you ever want someone to walk her or walk her with you then I'd be up for it. My parents refuse to allow me to have a pet which is one of the reasons I'm thinking about moving out." Okay, Sam probably didn't need to know this but hey ho. Alex crouched down, hands rubbing over the dog's head and side, "aren't you a cutie?" He cooed, completely ignoring the biting comment, he'd take his chances although he was 99.9% certain that Sam had just been kidding.
From his angle on the ground, Alex looked back up Sam, "so, you're back in town? Natalia says you've been off at college. That's pretty exciting, how're you finding it?" With one last longing stroke along Sadie's side, Alex stood back up a happy smile on his face. The guy just loved dogs.

"Sure, sure," Sam said with a shake of his head and a soft laugh, "You say that now." There was a teasing glint in his kaleidoscope eyes, a gentle smile on his lips as he watched the kid who used to poke fun at his knobby knees and shaggy hair pour affection onto his adopted pooch. It was kind of nice, really, to have Alex crouched below him, but he'd pay his respects to whatever karma gods later- now he had to focus on making a decent enough impression on the guy so word would get back to Natalia. Hopefully good word, but he'd settle. His own palm splayed out over the top of Sadie's head, calming strokes of his fingers making her mouth fall open and tongue lull out of her mouth as she basked in the praise being showered upon her. Not that she didn't get enough of that at home, with his mother dropping scraps on the floor on 'accident' for the dog to snack on and Teddy spending hours in front of the television with his hand buried in her fur, scratching into a state of submission. Shaking his head at the thought, he turned his attention back to the man smoothing his hands up and down his dog's sides.
In all honesty, he was more than a little shocked, eyebrows scrunching before he replied, sounding a tad taken aback, "I mean, yeah, sure. If you want to join me, I wouldn't mind the company." Alex Harper actually wants to hang out with him. Natalia Harper going on a not quite date to feed ducks at the park. What kind of parallel universe did he fall into? And how did he make sure he never left? This was heaven- or at least everything he'd wanted as a teenager. "I totally get what you mean. Though not quite with your parents- the dorm I was living in banned animals," he shook his head, lips in a soft pout, "So I moved out." He shrugged, nothing was going to stop him from saving Sadie. Even if he did have to give up his scholarship-funded dorm room to move into an apartment with the help of Misha, which wasn't exactly a downgrade but the guy was a borderline nutcase and Sam's expenses were slim given that a majority of it now went into rent.
He went through all that trouble to get her, the least Sadie could do is not make him look like a fool in front of the town's general population.
His first thought at Alex's next words were 'she talks about me?' They were on the tip of his tongue, but he withheld. Barely. Watching him stand, Sam tried to mask how elated he felt with a simple shrug, "Yeah. In town for the holidays, was back for summer. Just when I get the chance, I come back," which is mainly due to his progress with Nat, but he wasn't going to say that. His father still held him at a distance it ruined his jolly moods. "Stanford is great," he says with a palm at the back of his neck, scratching just under his hairline, "I mean, it's difficult but worth it. Lots of great people." He kept silent on Gen, she didn't seem like a safe topic anymore.

Honestly, this here was a feeling Alex could get used to, a dog beneath his hands and a friendly conversation with someone. It was a nice change from the flighty lifestyle he’d had these past couple of years.
Head turning up to smile at Sam as he agreed on the walking idea, Alex couldn’t help but be a tiny bit surprised. They’d never been great friends at school, wasn’t even sure if they’d been friends but maybe that could change. From was Alex could see, Sam had his act together and it had only been a couple of weeks ago that Alex’s mother sat him down and told him to get some good influences in his life. Maybe, if he was willing, Sam could be one of those influences. “Don’t blame you, because,” he rubbed a hand down Sadie’s side before continuing, “who could leave someone so lovely behind?”
Stretching once he’d stood back up, Alex shoved one hand into the front pocket of his jeans. “Fair enough,” Alex replied with a nod, the clouds overhead shifted, covering the sun from view, a few of the park goers glanced up at the sky, frowning at it- probably wondering if it was going to rain. A little rain never hurt anyone though.
“Sounds pretty cool,” Alex said with a nod of his head. Thinking back on it, if he could change one part of the life he’d lived so far, he would have chosen to go college or at least paid more interest in them even if the main reason he wanted to go was for the people and to keep himself busy. Alex was the type who quickly got bored and when he was locked in that state of boredom he tended to grow reckless; doing things he really shouldn’t have- he’d probably pay for it one day. “So lots of great people- does that mean that you have a girlfriend or something?” Alex was all back to being cheeky, an elfish grin on his lips as he had to restrain himself for giving Sam a playful punch on the shoulder.

It always flattered him, strangely enough, when people took a shine to Sadie. He felt honored that it was his dog that brought those cheeky grins to people's lips, like he finally did something right by refusing to let the ball of energy be put down. It didn't matter if he was being completely ignored as two little girls fawned over his pooch, Sam always felt pride burst in his chest as their eyes lit up. His dog did that, and that's all he could ask for. It was about time he did something to bring people up rather than down- not that he really ever did that, but he'd never been the life of the party. Sadie brought a light into his life, made things a little more bearable. Not just for him, but for every single person she encountered. She was a (not so) little ball of sunshine that Sam had to fight to control. Difficult as she could be, Sam loved her. He couldn't imagine where he'd be if he didn't have her by his side.
"I don't think anyone could have," he finally commented, eyes glued to his dog as she let her tongue lull to the side of her canine lips, panting just for something to do. He shrugged, glancing up at Alex with a soft smirk before letting his attention drop back to Sadie. No one had wanted to euthanize her, but with her high energy levels and limited space, it was going to be necessary- and Sam couldn't. He wouldn't let that happen. So here they are. Sadie making Sam look like an even bigger idiot than everyone already thought he was, and he couldn't help but love it.
Sam's eyes casted towards the sky as he caught Alex glancing upwards, a small dip in his lips as he catalogued it and well, Sam was curious as to what he saw. Clouds. Dark ones, promising rain. Maybe not a downpour, but still. He'd never really minded the rain, but with Sadie? She was a puddle magnet, always trying to drown herself in the pools of water and then leaping onto him as if to assure that she was victorious against it. Sam would always end up soaked because of it, but he couldn't really complain. Probably needed a bath anyways.
His attention snapped back to Alex as he spoke again, a slow blush coming to his cheeks (because apparently he's just a freaking blushing machine) as he tilted his head down and refused to meet Alex's eye for a moment. He rocked with the force of the man's punch, ever so slightly because it wasn't a rough one. His answer was soft spoken, a bit shy because how did he go about this without sound like a loser and/or confessing his love for his sister. Hm.
"No. No girlfriend. I mean, I brought a girl back home with me. Gen, but- we're nothing really," he thinks. Genevieve gave him lasting looks sometimes, the curl to her lips nearly predatory and Sam didn't know how to deal with that, "She just visiting. But no girlfriend- just great people." He glanced up at Alex through his shaggy bangs, a cheeky grin on his lips to lighten his embarrassment.

“I certainly wouldn’t have.” Or at least he would have tried to not. Maybe he would have gotten into a fight with his parents over it but even they wouldn’t force him to return her back. Actually that was a good plan. Note to self: find dog from shelter, adopt dog, and bring dog home- goals achieved? A dog.
A blush was a telling thing and Alex could be very curious. “Woah, that sounds serious.” Second note to self:don’t tell Natalia that. Here’s the thing, Alex wasn’t saying that Natalia had a crush on Sam or if she even saw him anything than more than a friend but there was something Alex couldn’t quite figure out whenever Natalia mentioned the boy. Like some kind of softness which wasn’t normally there miraculously appeared and so far he’d found no other link. “I mean bringing a girl home,” rubbing a hand against the back of his neck Alex shook his head. “Sounds more than ‘nothing really.” What was Alex’s aim here with the conversation, did he truly care or was he doing this for Natalia’s sake?
It was then that Alex felt a wet drop splat onto the top of his hand, bringing it closer to his face for inspection before feeling another splash on his head, Alex quickly concluded that hey- it had just started to rain.

All Sam could do was beam at Alex as he showered another compliment unto his dog- so lovely not even a Harper would abandon her. Now only if he could get a Harper to feel that way about him. He wasn’t saying he was jealous of his dog, but- well. He dropped that thought, knowing that if he went down ‘Natalia’ road, it would only end with gushy looks and awed tones- and he especially didn’t need to do that in front of her brother.
Not while he was scrutinizing his relationship with another woman. Crap. How does one say that they are simply not interested in anyone else because they’ve been in love with the person they’re talking to’s sister for as long as they could remember? If anyone could figure out how to put that into words, he’d be forever grateful.
Nibbling on his bottom lip anxiously, he dropped his eyes to where Sadie was squirming anxiously- a squirrel taunting her from the tree line- as he tried to find the words to respond without giving himself away. Easier said than done. “It’s really not,” Sam promised, shaking his head, but still not meeting his eye, “My mom’s just- she’s sick and Gen is a med major, and she offered to come and help while we’re on break and,” he shrugged, fighting down the emotion in his voice as he mentioned his mom as he persisted, “It is nothing. She might,” he cut off that train of thought quick, “It’s nothing to me. Not like that. She’s great, but,” his shoulders bobbed once more, the words bleeding off his tongue into nothing but an awkward silence.
And then he was pelted by a rain drop. Great.
Glancing at the sky, he tightened his hold on his dog’s leash and met Alex’s gaze head on. The ball was in his court, they could continue this talk somewhere else, but he expected more than anything to just be dismissed like he used to be when they were younger.

Alex was planning on writing up this conversation in a full essay style when he got home to present his findings to Natalia and was half tempted to get his phone out to record the conversation. Maybe later he’d play the recording back to Rose to see if she could spot anything he was saying that could have another meaning that Alex had missed. Frankly Alex had heard enough of Rose analysing people’s conversations with Iris and Jamie to know she was pretty good at it. It was sad to hear that Sam’s mum was sick, families made up of hunters were often very close and losing a family member was not only a major blow to your family but also to your trade and way of life.
“Well, if there’s anything that our family can do, just let us,” Alex said with a shrug of his shoulders before adding, “maybe I’ll send Natalia over with a basket of goodies or something.” Here’s the situation though, Alex knew that if Natalia heard this conversation or even caught wind of what he was doing, the claws would be out and a screaming fest would incur so hopefully Natalia would never quite figure out what Alex had been up to.
The rain wasn’t a major issue but Alex had told his family that he wouldn’t be out too long, he’d be roped into helping with cooking later much to his disgust. Not that he couldn’t cook, he could and he was pretty good at it (only burnt his toast 1 out every 5 times, an actual MasterChef), it was just that he didn’t enjoy being made to cook. He did it for pleasure not survival. “Were you heading anywhere with the dog, or?” Alex was happy to accompany Sam wherever he was going and then head off on his own.

It wasn't a surprise that his cheeks were bright pink once more, head ducked down under the facade that he was checking Sadie's leash when in all reality they both knew he was a blushing mess over the mere mention of Natalia. Again. But this time at his house offering goodies. That wasn't fair, of course he was going to be red in the face over that image. Sam was making excuses, none that Alex would here, but he felt safe in knowing he had a few up his sleeve to mumble out if he asked about the heat radiating off the taller man's cheeks.
The embarrassment aside, Sam was truly gracious for the offer, knowing full well that the man meant it. Hunters were like family, if the Harper's caught wind of a ailment in the Styles' house, he didn't doubt that the mother hen would rush his nest. Which was weird to think about, but he was thankful that Alex still offered it. Their families haven't been the closest since his father dropped the hunting life in favor of tending to his wife, but he knew that Mrs. Harper wouldn't hesitate to help in anyway she could.
"Thank you," he said, truly thankful as he carefully negated gushing over Natalia. He was already walking a thin line here with all the pubescent face malfunctions. Seriously, you would have thought he'd have gotten over blushing by now. No. He was just a tall, babbling idiot (*prestigious college student) with permanent pink cheeks. "That means a lot, you know?" Sam didn't doubt his mother would get better, but any little thing helped.
