Uneventful. It was the only word that came to mind that could even vaguely describe how the past year had gone down. Nothing remarkable, not a peep out of the ordinary. Not that he would have even noticed if there had been. Leon learned to keep his head down and nose clean. After the mishap at the dance nearly a year ago, he figured it was best if he found out where he stood real quick. He was new, he didn't have ties, and he was ultimately clueless. He didn't belong here, and he didn't pretend to. So he kept to himself, the school's out-casted nerd, Cooper, and his baby sister flanking him- if he even bothered with having them around. This was a new Leon, different from the confident teen he'd been when he'd first arrived. Fresh from overseas and freed from his past. No more kids pushing him around and no more sympathetic from those too afraid to stick up for him. Here he'd been the 'cool British kid' at the start, but a month or two in and he almost missed his transparent status back in Wolverhampton.
Almost.
Relatively speaking, it was rather easy to slip out of the limelight and into the back row. Eyes on the board, lips sealed shut, and homework turned in early. Prim and proper student, nearly invisible to the world. He didn't speak to Rose as often since then, figuring she didn't need him leeching off her friendship and stirring anymore problems- life around here seemed hectic for those who'd grown up here. Not to mention they were so close-knit, he doubted anyone had even noticed the outsider falling back. It wasn't like he wanted pity from his choice, no. God, he didn't even want their attention. It was his decision to just get through his last years of school without too much hassle and move on. Staying silent was just easier than trying to play the social game while keeping up his grades.
He needed to get his priorities straight, he simply did. No hard feelings- at least on his end. He just dropped off the face of the earth, a face in the shadows.
So like he said, or thought- uneventful. Essays written, problems solved, and one shaky presentation on American Geography given. Leon had passed with flying colors, though he couldn't say the same for Willow who was rather caught up in the teenage angst of high school- and he was glad she was. At least one of them should be living it up, he just didn't have the desire to. Not in that way, at least. Education was where his time laid, and senior year was upon him.
Bag slung over his shoulder, leather jacket in place over a plain white tee and his worn-thin jeans hanging loosely on his hips, Leon slipped out of the cab of his truck with ease. Willow was right behind him, wasting no time before scampering off in her dress to find her friends, only granting a few words of luck before she disappeared into the crowd.
Great, let's do this.
One foot in front of the other and he was down the hall, gaze lingering just ahead of her rather than dancing along the crowds of students- some eager to be back with their friends, others groaning at the loss of their California summer. Leon couldn't stop the soft sigh from falling off his lips as he reached his locker, books and binders finding themselves neatly stacked within as he recited his schedule in his head.
So caught up in the mindless action of sorting himself, Leon hadn't even noticed someone had slid up beside him until there was a tap at his shoulder, his head whipping to the side as confusion crossed his features. Who would want to talk to him?

Rose knew she'd been a bad friend, a terrible friend really, maybe even a piece of trash level friend but still, it was a new year and Rose could try to make up her poor behaviour. Hopefully. The matter at hand was Leon, he'd been there from her from the start but when things had gotten tricky, Rose had bailed. She at least owed him an apology because quite frankly she'd hardly seen him since Liam came back and that was a while ago.
Unfortunately, Rose had missed the expat on their first day at school but not she was determined to find him before the day got away from her or maybe them?
It was a warmer day so Rose had gone for the bare legged skirt look with boots, hoping Natalia would give her a lift. But she didn't so Rose had to push Alex out of breath, promising him many things she'd regret. Therefore, Rose had grown agitated in only an hour of waking up. What a great start to the day.
Finally rocking up to school, Rose fumbled with her back, aiming to find her phone to locate her friends but before she had a chance, a familiar head appeared in her vision, just heading into school. Ha! This would be a great chance to stal- no, find Leon for an overdue catch up.
What she say to him? That she realised she'd been lousy when it came to replying to messages, that she hadn't meant to shun him in corridors, that she regretted her actions. It was all true but there was no easy way to say it let alone come to terms with it. Scrambling up the steps into school, Rose was in hot pursuit of someone who she'd once spent Christmas Eve with only last Christmas, it felt like so long ago.
This lead to her being slightly out of breath - she really hadn't been training lately and it was starting to show - and still vaguely agitated when she did find Leon at his locker. Taking a moment to gain composure, not that Rose ever had much of it, Rose took the few steps up to Leon before tapping his shoulder lightly, hoping he wouldn't be angry. No, not angry, just confused. Then again he might not realise who it was yet.
She should start with hello, that was sensible right?
"I'm sorry for being a shit friend and I'd really like you back in my life again, if you'd have me."
Yes, Rose had never been sensible and had just dived straight into the deep end. "Also, hi."

Startled by the rush of words oozing from the girl's mouth, Leon just started blankly at her for a moment. Stunned. When was the last time Rose had talked to him? Or, while he was on the subject, even acknowledged him? He couldn't recall much interaction after their sleep over on Christmas Eve, the days following up a blur. He couldn't pinpoint whose fault it was nor could he figure out what really made them drift apart, but did those even really matter. The fact was that the damage was done. A far amount of distance had been put between the two. A line had been etched in the sand and neither had dared to cross over it.
Until now.
He understood the reasoning behind it, why she'd reach out now. Last chance to make amends. Last year in high school, probably in this town. Last chance to rid herself of the guilt that wasn't rightfully hers in the first place. So yeah, he got why she would do it, but at the same time couldn't comprehend what she wanted with him now. They were two different worlds. Land and sea. She was the roaring ocean, populated with schools of fish and adored by the moon. He was a shaded forest, prowled by lonely predators and graced with the fewest of sunrays. Dark and light. Rose had her friends, her boyfriend, her family- all these people who held her high, kept her close. Leon had his little sister and a quiet bedroom.
Leon changed, falling into a soft silence with muted smiles and shy glances. He wasn't the cheeky British lad she remembered, or at least not in his opinion.
He blinked, washing the shock away as he inhaled slowly. His chestnut gaze dragged over her, head to toe- just soaking in her presence and all the rambunctious drama that she dragged along behind her. Once upon a time, she would have been the kind of girl he would have crushed over. Spent endless nights concocting plans he'd never go through with, fumble over his words, and put a cherry to shame with how red his cheeks would get. He played with wildfires like her, knowing he'd always get burnt in the end because that was just his luck, wasn't it?
He'd learned his lesson before he'd stepped on the plane to head over seas, though. Sealed his heart up and screwed his head on straight. Relationships were messy, and he needed to focus on schooling.
Anyhow, it wasn't like someone as amazing as Rose would even spare him a second glance when she had her jock drooling after her.
How did his mind even get here? Way to go Leon, space out while she's trying to patch things up. As the great Troy Bolton (and accompanying Wildcats) so soulfully sang- get your head in the game.
Coughing to clear his throat and stir the silence, Leon let his eyes fall to his feet, his shyness taking hold as his fingers fiddled with the ends of his coat. He wanted to ask why, wanted to know why she'd suddenly decided she needed to drag him back into her mess of friends that pushed him out in the first place, but all that came out was, "Uh, hi. Okay- um. Okay?"
How was he really meant to accept an apology he didn't think she owed?

Well, that wasn't the response she'd been hoping for. What she hoping for she wasn't too sure but this, this lack of response was kind of a bummer. Did he not care? It seemed that way, maybe she'd caught him at a bad time, she had jumped this upon him with very little preparation. Ah, that had to be it, she'd spooked him. Rose felt though that if she asked if she'd scared him, he wouldn't be too pleased with her.
Shoulders slumping slightly, her usually bright smile seemed to dim. In reality Rose had hoped he'd respond with 'that's great! Lets go get burgers!' So, you can see why she'd be a little disappointed with his choice of response. If only Rose hadn't let this friendship fade to glowing embers because she had no more wood to light.
This fall into silence was killing her and she couldn't help but fill the gap. "So, senior year... that's exciting. I nearly didn't get here..." Nervous laughter ended her sentence for her before she pushed a lock of dark hair away from her face. She was seriously beginning to regret initiating this conversation. She was a mess.
Having to still her hands from continuously rubbing against each other, Rose kicked the toe of her shoe against the familiar floor of the school. She didn't know what else to say and she felt bad for both of them, for putting them through this interaction.

Okay, so maybe the whole ordeal that tore them apart wasn't his fault, but this sure was. Here Rose was trying to patch things up, needle and thread in hand and he's batting her paws away from his torn flesh. Shouldn't he want to be put together again? Shouldn't he want this? She was a great friend, was his best friend, really. It wasn't like he had anyone else to throw that title at. So shouldn't he be putting forth more effort than this?
He should be.
So he did.
He watched her face fall, shoulders droop, mood change- and his heart twitched, aching at the sight. Leon hadn't meant to upset here, he just didn't know what to do. What was he supposed to do? Fix it, but how? A smile seemed like a good place to start, or at least he figured as much. Mustering up his nearly forgotten ability to curl his lips upwards, Leon let his honey-encrusted gaze roam over her face, willing her own eagerness return. Finding his voice, he huffed out a pitiful excuse for a laugh and nodded in agreement, "Yeah, exciting. Really weird, but exciting." He bit his tongue, keeping himself from responding to the last bit with 'it's all in the company you keep' because surely that wouldn't help the mending of their friendship. Despite how true it may be. He group of friends relied more on instinct than intellect, far as he could tell- he didn't really know them all that well, so don't quote him on that. Anyhow, with them, she spent more time out, playing off each other's need to have fun whereas he could have helped her with her schooling, could have taken some of the weight off her shoulders.
But the past is the past, and she made it anyhow. Doesn't matter what he could or couldn't have offered.
Tilting his head down some to seek out her gaze, the corner of his lip shimmied up some, face trying to mock up some form of a soft look- which wasn't that hard at all. Sure, his thoughts leaned more bitter than they used to, but he still was a puppy in most senses. "I'm sorry too," Leon's voice was gentle, barely more than a whisper, "I hadn't meant for us to lose touch like we had either, but I'd like to be back too." Hopefully that did the trick, he couldn't risk losing her again over his lack of social skills.

He was smiling, if it looked slightly strained Rose tried to ignore it and instead offered a small smile of her own, there was no need for her to stand here looking glum when neither of them quite knew what to do in terms of fixing their friendship. His laugh was there again and Rose's smile grew, she'd forgotten his easy company and how well they could just joke with each other. "It is weird." Rose agreed a slight frown suddenly crossing her face. She hadn't thought of it much up until now but at soon she had to start making plans for her future; college, career paths that sort of thing aka the thing Rose was clueless on. It took a great effort on her part to a) not let that worry show and b) not admit it there and then to Leon. Throwing all her woes at him would probably be a bit startling to say the least.
Her gaze shifted down as she'd kicked the floor but it flicked up when she felt him seeking her out. He was speaking so softly, like this moment would break if one of them laughed or said something too quickly. Rose's mind flicked to Liam briefly, wondering what he was up to before focusing back on Leon. Yeah, Liam had never been a huge Leon fan but that didn't mean Rose shouldn't be. "Well then, we should stop moping and make up for lost time, eh?" Rose suggested, look brightening up again. "What do you have first period?"

As crude as it sounds, Leon really didn't expect them to have many, if any, classes together based on the fact that most of his own classes were advanced placement and she'd said she had barely scraped by- so he didn't have much hope to have her as a science partner, let alone be in the same room for the period. A small frown creased his lips as he tried to recall his schedule, mind suddenly blanking in the face of having to answer Rose's question. Fingers digging into his pockets and hiding there, his eyes roamed the hall for a moment as he combed through his thoughts. Lips parted around the words scrambling around his brain, it wasn't until his gaze locked on her's once again that he finally scrounged up, "I believe I have Study Hall first," which didn't make sense in his head, having an open block the first period of the day, but he supposed it'd be helpful later on down the line when he was overwhelmed with homework and needed to cram in some studying or finish off a project during that period. So it had it's advantages, even if he saw it as a waste of a class academically.
Anyhow, not exactly an optimal time to get lost in your head, Leon.
Keeping his lips locked in a small, but genuine, smile, he threw the ball back in her court with a curious tilt to his head and gentle tone, "What about you?" His eyes roamed across her face for a moment, soaking in the attention she was finally laying on him- it was odd to say the least, being locked in place by her beaming persona, something he wasn't quite used to anymore. Though he figured he should get accustomed to it quick if she had any say in it- as long as he wasn't run off by her friends again.

One shoulder resting against a locker, Rose hoped that whoever it belonged to didn't come by and ask to get into it, she was comfy after all. Glancing down at the lockers lock as Leon seemed to stall; Rose couldn't blame him if he didn't know his timetable yet. It had taken her most of junior year to remember it- shocking, right? In her defense, she'd missed quite a bit of school last year so taking that into account, she'd had less practice in remembering her timetable.
After establishing that, yes, this was the same type of lock all the other lockers had - although maybe this one was rusting maybe? - Rose turned her focus back onto the British boy, a lazy smile on her face. Ah, study hall, usually whenever Rose's timetable told her she had that, she classed it as free period which given her academic career last year, maybe she shouldn't.
Oh, her? Crap, what did she have? Eyes darting off to the side as she thought about it, Rose honestly had no idea. "Lemme check," Rose explained as she opened up her bag with a small laugh, pulling out her schedule, Rose deflated. "It would appear I have English. How about I meet you back here for lunch though?" Rose was actually beginning to enjoy English, once she got passed some of the trickier vocabulary like 'Semantics' and 'Pragmatics' (because, seriously, who cares about that?) she found that she was quite good at it.
Stuffing the paper back into her bag, Rose then looked back up at Leon with a grin, hoping he'd agree to lunch with her. Liam, she hadn't seen or heard from him in a long time, she was lost without him, didn't know where he was or if he was okay. It was killing her but hopefully spending time with Leon again would help.

A slow frown crawled over his lips, unconsciously dragging the chapped flesh down into the smallest of pouts. There was a twinge of sorrow (if that was even the right word- it was maybe a little less dramatic of an effect) that spiraled through his core as she explained that they didn't have the class together- which meant the likelihood of them having any class together would be near to none. He couldn't stop the soft sigh that left his lips as his gaze fell to the ground. God, it would just be so much easier if they could have gone through with this whole 'picking up the pieces' thing now, talked it out through class and what not rather than have him sit through half the school day and conjure up every single bad thing that could possibly go wrong to psych himself out of patching things up.
Leon knew he couldn't though. As much as he liked to deny and hide it, deep down he did care for Rose- just how much was a thing even he didn't dare touch. It was best to isolate himself, to be this new character than think about how much he had missed her company.
Fake it until you make it, he always says (though only when it comes to socializing, there was no cheating in his book, no faking school). Nerd.
Realizing he'd blanked and left her hanging, Leon quickly jumped into the present and met her cautious gaze. His voice cracked as he rushed his words out, completely thrown by everything that'd happened in the short span of time- it was really just so much easier to be alone, he didn't have to try at all, but here he was- promising Rose to fall back into her arms. "Uh, ye-yeah, we can do lunch- I mean, if you want. Wouldn't you rather hang out with your other friends? I'm sure they want your company more than you want mine." He couldn't stop the words from falling out, eyes widening to the size of saucers as he realized just what he'd said. He had really thought he'd left his low self-esteem back in Britain- though it seems he was gravely mistaken. Cheeks a deep pink and sweat gathering in his palms, Leon wasn't too sure how he'd gotten so nervous, a fumbling mess in mere seconds in her presence. Physics and Calculus he could do, talking to Rose? Not so much.
Trying to repair what he may have just screwed up, he was quick to drop his gaze and mumble, "God, I'm sorry- I didn't mean to say that," though he didn't deny that it was true. Why would she waste lunch on the first day, on any day for that matter, on him when she had her friends and boyfriend fawning over her? He couldn't help but wonder.
Way to go, Leon. There was a reason they'd lost touch after all.

Leon's behavior, Rose would ask her sister about it later, there was something going on that she couldn't figure out. The likely answer was that they were both just feeling awkward with being around each other again. Hair slipping down her arm, the feel of it was cool against her skin. Waiting for him to reply was a sure sign of her recently claimed patience- although it was still very minimal. She shared that, that lack of patience, with her sister, neither of them had much time to wait for things.
With a cracking voice that surprised Rose, she listened to him babble on, her cheeks growing slightly warm. Ah, they'd gotten here, to this stage already. She'd hoped they'd be able to go over all of that at lunch and they probably could but he'd want at least a little explanation now, right? So they were both there, blushing like two twelve year old girls who had just heard the word 'penis.' Looking away and down the school hallway, Rose nodded although what was she nodding at specifically? "Of course I want to spend time with you, dummy." Making sure her tone was stereotypical to her upbeat and Rose-y way of speaking, she met his gaze with another smile.
"Hey, don't be sorry- I know what you mean." Pushing her hair away from her arm and back behind her, Rose stepped forward, away from her prop against the lockers. "I can explain all... that at lunch and trust me, I will. I don't want to rush the story now though." readjusting her back to a comfier position, Rose took another step backwards. "So make sure you come back here at lunch and don't ditch me, okay?" With a final flash of a smile, Rose turned away with one backwards wave of her hand. If she didn't get to English now, she'd likely be late and end up with a rubbish seat.
Her morning went by with ease, she made quick conversation with those around her and during her free period before lunch she worked on a piece of homework with Jamie. Before she knew it, it was lunch and that was when Rose realised that all of a sudden she was enjoying school, time no longer seemed to drag by and she found that she wanted to learn. The epiphany hit her like a train, stopping her in her tracks for a second. Shaking her head, she needed to move before she was trampled.
Rose was first back to Leon's locker and chewing on her lower lip she couldn't help but worry he wouldn't show- would decide she was a lost cause. Head ducked down as she studied the nails on her right hand, all she could do was hope he'd show and that he, too, hadn't left her alone without an explanation.

“Oh,” was his wise response, mouth handing slightly in the shape of it even after silence had filled between them. Of course she would. Of course, like it was the most obvious thing to want to hang out with the too lanky, too smart, too British kid who’d basically been shunned. Of course, like it was that easy. How does she make it seem so easy? Leon just let his head bob after she told him that he hadn’t needed to apologize for his rambling (though he felt it necessary, maybe out instinct of just in general screwing up socially- who knows) and made sure to keep a shy smile on his lips- really, she didn’t need to get the wrong idea from him after they’d managed to make it this far.
His gaze remained solely focused on her- no matter how hard it was to do that, and he still wasn’t quite sure how he managed it- as she spoke, offering him up a promise of an explanation, but for later. Now he’d have to wait, would fester with the thoughts of ‘why’ and ‘how’, but he knew better than to let that get to him. He knew better than to be acting like a scared little boy in the face of a bully because this wasn’t that. Not even close. Leon knew that, knew how cruel things could get, so why was he treating this situation the same? Why was he making things so complicated?
As Megara so heartily sang: get a grip, girl.
It makes sense in his head. Disney always makes sense.
Shaking out of his stupor, Leon stuttered out a soft, “Okay,” and watched her go, eyes lingering on her retreating form for just a moment longer before he sprang into action and gathered the last of his things from his locker. Books shoved in his backpack and schedule in hand, he headed down the opposite way and started his school day.
Study Hall was overall uneventful. Most of the kids spent it catching up on their summer (Leon spent it avoiding sunlight and hiding whenever Willow tried to get him to drive her somewhere) and the teacher just sat, gazing out of the window with a pensive look- as if he wondered why he even bothered with showing up today. Leon knew the feeling. English was by no means simple. It was as if the teacher didn’t quite get the memo that first day meant no work and slammed them with four chapters to read by Wednesday and handed out a bouquet of assignments. Of course he’d already read the book, what else would he do? He spent the beginning of Anatomy working on his English homework, not bothering to listen to his science teacher babble on about the rules because weren’t they always the same? The upside was that he managed to snag Cooper as his desk mate- and was thankful he wouldn’t have to partner up with unhelpful strangers again and be dealt with the workload. The period right before lunch was an elective, AP Psychology, and was stuffed with handouts. It was a teacher he’d had before for Economics, and they’d gotten along quite well- which was probably why the man asked him to stay after class for a chat. Thus, he was late meeting Rose.
Maybe running wasn’t the right word, but he sure did have a pep in his step when he rounded the corner and made his way towards his locker. A sigh of relief brushed over his lips as he caught sight of the girl- she hadn’t ditched him after all, nice.
An honest grin spread across his lips, eyes lighting up as he managed a, “Hey,” before surprisingly letting out his thoughts, “I really hadn’t expected you to be here.” Eyes widening slightly once again, he quickly covered it up with, “Because I’m late, didn’t think you’d wait this long. Teacher got chatty, sorry. Hi.”

Head snapping up at the sound of an approaching figure, Rose was met with a familiar fringe. Shoulders sagging in relief, Rose stepped towards him, smile happily in place on her face. "Heyo," She replied about to suggest what to do about lunch when he began speaking again. "Oh, it's fine. No problems there" She felt so much so that she had to reassure him to make him stay like if she said the wrong thing he'd go thinking she didn't want him. Which was not how she felt, obviously.
"So, lunch. I was thinking we could go hang out on the bleachers, I'll tell you my woes and you can try and not get any sun burn." Rose was teasing of course but maybe there was some truth there. Tilting her head to the side, Rose waited for him to agree. Maybe it was pretty vain of her to assume he'd agree but hey, everyone had to have some confidence somewhere otherwise they'd hide under a rock their whole entire life.
Natalia had told her that. It was the day Rose had turned 16, she'd oohed and aah-ed over her outfit for an hour before her sister had come in, say down on her bed and told her they needed to have a chat. Natalia had been back from her travels just to see Rose on her birthday, it was nice to have her there, particularly when Alex had been too busy. "Rose, come here. No one tonight is going to remember what you wear, they'll remember what it was like to be your friend, to spend time with you. They won't care whether your bra strap was showing or if you wobbled in your shoes a little bit. And if they do, they weren't worth having as a friend." Rose had sat down next to her sister, arms crossed across her chest, eyes glued to her ground; she'd felt more six years old in that moment. Natalia wrapped an arm around her shoulders, pulling her towards her. This was before she'd been bitten, when she wasn't someone with more bite than heart. "Sad thing is Rosey, I'm twenty now and I speak to basically no one from school... so just make sure you enjoy tonight, don't worry if your outfit is going to offend someone or if they'll think you're boring because you're still wearing jeans because at the end of the day, your memories are what you'll always have to look back on." Rose couldn't help herself, she'd cried a little bit. There in her sister's embrace she felt safe and reassured even if perhaps Natalia was speaking of sad things. Natalia had laughed then, giving Rose a squeeze, "don't cry though, you're ass looks great and you've got an envious figure - own it. You've got to have some confidence otherwise you'll end up living under a rock and Rose, my sweet pea, you're too pretty for that life."
As the memory flashed through Rose's mind she found herself feeling short of breath, man, she was about to cry wasn't she? No, she at least had to make it outside before that happened. "Come on, lets go." Rose regretted the fact that her voice caught slightly.

There was no stopping the soft smile that crossed over his lips as he tilted his head down and tried to hide how comforted he was by her words behind his hair. Leon was just that kind of person who always needed the reassurance, always second guessing if he was really wanted or just a bother- because usually it was the latter. Fingers hooked around the straps of his bag, he nodded along with her next words, allowing himself to laugh at her sunburn comment- though it was most likely true. Shaking the fringe out of his eyes, he let his eyes find her as he added, “That works with me.” He was tempted to say more, talk about how he was there to listen if she ever needed, but it just felt odd to speak the words. So he stayed quiet, fiddling with the padded straps for a moment as Rose seemed to get caught up in her thoughts.
Leon tilted his head slightly, eyes growing curious as the emotions on her face swapped from cheerful to almost forlorn. She just looked like she was going to cry, and god- what did he do now? He was on the verge of offering to leave if he was going to make her sob, figuring it was him ruining the moment with his self-consciousness, but it seems that’s not the case.
“Okay,” was his soft reply, nodding slowly as he stepped towards her- not liking the lost look on her face or the break to her voice at all. Daring to touch her, Leon let his hand find her wrist, fingers looping around it as he sought out her eyes. “Hey,” his voice was almost a whisper, filled with concern and comfort as he tilted his head and asked, “Are you okay?” She wasn’t, clearly, but he was giving her an out- would let her lie if she didn’t want to talk about it.
“C’mon,” he finally added after a moment, tugging on her arm slightly, not letting go as he urged her down the hall and towards the doors, “I’m sure some sun will do us both some good.”

Rose was glad he was up for her bleachers plan because anywhere else on campus involved other people and she wasn't a Harper for no reason, she didn't want other people to see her cry. Also, the cafeteria just seemed so loud these days when you weren't part of the group of people making so much noise, laughing over the same joke for five minutes before settling down and someone mentioning it again and falling into hysterics.
Rose felt so lost in her thoughts, she must have looked like a lonely puppy because Leon was immediately at attention. His hand was a comfort and Rose met his gaze as unflinchingly as she could. See, she knew the answer, it had been the same for a while, no, she wasn't okay but what was her biggest issue? "I will be." She muttered in response, she couldn't manage anything louder because now she knew for certain that she was going to cry. When she'd be okay though was a mystery to her at this stage. Maybe- no, hopefully - talking to Leon would help clear her head.
Following Leon down the hall and then outside, Rose welcomed the still warm air and sudden lack of buzzing students darting about like a bunch of bees. Was a bunch of bees called a buzz... in Rose's mind it should be. As a gust of wind came, Rose's hands struggled to push her hair out of face and to the side, oh the struggles of long hair and weather.
Reaching the bleachers, Rose plopped herself down a couple of benches up, scooted over enough to let Leon sit down beside her. "Earlier on, I was thinking about my sister. That's why I looked like I was about to cry." Rose shrugged her shoulders, hands placed around the edges of the bench in front of hair. "I miss her. I mean she's not dead but sometimes it's like she's not there even though we live in the same house." Of course it was very Rose liked to dive straight into the middle of a conversation without giving the person she was talking to a heads up. "And I guess I just don't know what to do. About her and, well, my whole life in general."

It sounded promising. Almost. At least she had hope? Leon knew she was a determined woman, so if she said she'd be okay, then he believed her- and maybe, just maybe he'd be able to help her along that road. Maybe she just needed to pull on his ear for a bit, drain her troubles onto someone who was looking from the outside in, rather than someone who was curled around her finger. Sometimes it just took an outside view to put things in perspective, and he hoped he could do that for her- even if talking about anything remotely linked to actually feeling things made him uncomfortable. Well, he'd make an exception for Rose.
He figured he'd always break the rules for her.
As they shoved their way through the double doors at the end of the hall, Leon physically cringed as the sun hit him. It'd been too long since he'd endured the sunlight, this could only end in pain. At some point, his hand had released its grip on her wrist, falling limply at his side as they maneuvered their way towards the bleachers. Had he ever even been out here? He couldn't recall any memory of it. No sports game visited, and he spent the pep rallies hiding in the cafeteria with all of the anti-school spirit kids. Wow. A year at Beacon Hills High and he'd never even made it as far as the field. Goes to show how much time he wastes putting any physical energy into anything. (None, he does absolutely no exercise. Unless you count Dance Dance Revolution battle with Cooper, but that's about it. Oops.)
With the space given to him, Leon squeezed in next to Rose, his thigh pressed against hers, shoulders brushing with every small movement. He usually had a personal bubble in place, cringing whenever someone dared to pop it, but alongside Cooper and Willow, he really wasn't all that bothered by the close proximity. Fingers picking at the frayed edge of a hole in his jeans, Leon tilted his head her way as she began to speak, unconsciously nodding along with her words. She just dove right in, and it took him a moment to put it all together, to decipher it and he carefully planned out what he needed to say. This was a crucial moment- or at least it was in his mind. He coughed once to clear his throat, gaze drifting over the field as he commented, "Well I'm glad she's not dead," he tried to go for joking, wanting to lighten the mood some before he continued, "And I can't help you much. I mean, I'm not on that side of the spectrum. I'm like your sister- in a way. Willow, she'll try to talk to me, you know? Get me to go places and do things and just talk about crap that I'm not into, and sometimes I'll give her the cold shoulder because I don't want that. I know she just wants to spend time with me, wants the attention of her big brother, but I don't have time to drive her to the mall or talk about whatever person's caught her attention now. So I don't quite get what you mean, but I think I may know why your sister acts the way she does." He paused, lips rolling together as he debated how to continue.
"If I had a say in what Willow did, I'd ask her to give me space. Let me move at my own pace, and when I'm ready, I'll dive into that whole teenage girl mess- but on my own clock. And maybe your sister, I'm assuming she's older? Maybe she needs to get back on her own pace. Being an adult or being a kid, it's different, and difficult and maybe she just needs some time to get herself together before she can deal with everything else around her." Leon finally dared to catch her eyes, not sure if his words were the right ones, "So, I guess what I'm saying is don't worry about her too much. As long as she's taking care of herself, just wait her out." Shrugging and turning his attention back to his holey jeans, he added, "What about the rest of your life?"
If she was going to spill, might as well let the whole dam free.
