It'd been a while since the kanima had decided to attack the school dance, and instead of calming people down that seemed to have had the opposite effect. Most people went about their lives normally now, thinking that the man who had terrorized the school that night was now dead, so they were safe, but the few people who knew about the kanima were on edge. It was almost like they were just waiting for the next attack, because there wasn't much they could do until then. It was frustrating everyone, and while Iris and Levi had been trying to work out who the kanima could be there was a lot of people in Beacon Hills, so it was a pretty hard thing to solve. They also had to find out as much as possible about this thing so when it did attack again they had a chance of beating it. It was a nice day, so Iris had made her way to the park, planning to do a bit of kanima research while making the most of the weather. She settled down quickly, lying down on her stomach with a few bits of paper strewn around her. She'd read most of it before, but there was some bits she still needed to wrap her head around properly. WORDS: 218 |

Exploring, that’s what he was down to now to waste time. He’d exhausted every outlet around his uncle’s cabin, he’d rearranged his room once, twice, three times before finally ravaging the kitchen. A round at the punching bag his uncle had hung up in the garage had him sweating and aching- it’d been a while since he’d been able to get in the ring and fight, and his body was throbbing from the exertion. He dragged himself through the immediate woods around the shelter, testing the limits of the land before finally sighing and giving in. Boredom was ever present and the house didn’t offer him any entertainment with his bat case of a guardian out of town on business.
So stretching his legs and diving into the ‘Beacon Hills lifestyle’ it was. The cabin he now called home was closer to the outskirts of town then most houses, making his walk a time-consuming and mind-numbing one. There were trees, dirt, trees, the most obscure looking crack in the concrete- and oh wow, more trees. Boring.
It took fifteen minutes at an easy pace to reach the brink of civilization, and another ten to get out of suburbia and into the town itself. The shops were dull, the food was pricy, and the people were either overtly cheery or flashing him odd looks. It sucked.
Or maybe he was just being pessimistic.
Having your parents die and then being forced into a whole new life can do that to someone surprisingly enough.
Passing the mall, the vacant club, and a video store, Ashton found himself in a park. People loomed on benches, lingered around trees to seek out a chilled moment in the shade, and then- then there was a girl alone on the grass, papers spread before her and a pensive look on her admittedly beautiful features.
Guess who he walked towards.
Without hesitation, he plopped down in front of her- subtly wasn’t is specialty, and neither was personal space. Ashton did what Ashton wanted. Simple as that.
Eyes glancing over the papers swiftly, he got the most prominent and repeated word. Kanima. Now he wasn’t feeling so hot with his decision. Hunter? Werewolf? Some other creature that goes bump in the night? Crap.
Not letting his hesitation show an inch, the blonde simply smirked and asked, “What-cha reading?”

| Iris had pulled out her note book, which contained a list of people she and Levi had come up with that could be the Kanima. After rereading a certain section of a passage containing some things a Kanima could and couldn't do she realised one person could be crossed off the list, and went to do that promptly. Well, she would have done it if only she could find her pen. Pulling herself out of the concentrated trance she'd put herself into she sat up and pulled her bag onto her lap rummaging for a pen when, out of nowhere, a shadow was thrown over her bag. She quickly glanced up from her bag and laid her eyes on the boy who had decided to come and talk to her, even though she had no idea who he actually was, but he was busy reading her research sheets. She slid her bag off her lap and was quick to try and put all her papers into one pile so he couldn't read them. Of course, she did this in a casual way, not wanting to come off as a paranoid weirdo. "Nothing that interesting, really. Just homework" She replied, it was only a half lie- sure the homework wasn't for school, but she still classed it as homework. Placing her closed note pad on the small piles of papers so there was nothing he could really read, she shrugged "Sorry, mess everywhere" She said off handedly, finally looking back at him and smiling. "Sorry, did you need some help or something?" Iris asked, hoping not to come off as rude in anyway, she just assumed that a stranger who came up to her needed help with something. WORDS: 287 |

The girl made slow work of hiding the papers, clearly trying to be nonchalant as the lie tumbled off her lips. The damage had been done though, he saw, but surely wouldn't let her know that he did. Ashton knew that Beacon Hills crawled with the supernatural and those seeking to exterminate his kind alike- he wasn't about to get offed now because he couldn't keep it cool. Play stupid, don't care- it's how he works. This isn't different from anything else.
Sitting back on his heels, Ashton directed his attention to the girl's face, admiring the serenity he found deep in her pale blue eyes. He studied her for a moment, letting his lips curve into a sure smile as his fingers danced atop his thighs. "Homework, eh?" He didn't push it, just musing in on the fact. He hadn't seen her around school, but then again he hadn't paid much more than a sideways glare to a handful of students he'd been forced to interact with. Maybe forced isn't the right word, because it wasn't like he had a problem talking to them, it's just he'd rather not. The sooner he was finished with school in its entirety, the better. Glancing down once as she apologized for her mess, he just cocked one side of his lips up further and shook his head. It was a waste of her breath, he wouldn't have cared if she'd littered across the park grounds much less have her papers out for her to study.
His gaze batted back upwards as she spoke again, and wasn't that the money question? Why was he over here bothering this stranger? "Huh? Oh, nah. Don't need help, you just seemed lonely." He shrugged without ceremony, falling back into a more comfortable sitting position and making himself at home before her. "Figured I'd keep ya' company."
Ashton shot her a quick wink, more out of the act of just doing it rather than flirting. All for fun.

| "Oh" Iris replied, his answer taking her by surprise. She'd never been used to people just coming over and keeping her company, as she'd always had quite a limited friendship group. Becoming friends with Jasper had opened up her social group a bit, and had gained her a few more friends, so she was a little more used to this kind of thing, but she'd never had anyone she didn't know come up to her for company. Tucking a piece of her ashy hair behind her ear she smiled at the guy, pretending this wasn't as strange as it was. She was pretty sure she'd seen him around school somewhere, maybe... She told herself she had, just to make herself feel better. He seemed like a nice guy, so she didn't think she had any reason to worry right away. "Well, hi. I'm Iris" She told him, figuring it was a good place to start the conversation that had been flung on her. She put her bag to the side, but not before pulling out the pen she had been rummaging for just so she would have something to fiddle with. She was now mostly okay with encountering new people, but there was still a little bit of anxiety always there at the back of her mind ever since what had happened with Oz. WORDS: 224 |

Maybe this hadn't been the brightest idea after all. Yeah, she was easy on the eyes and seemed to be friendly enough, but the uncomfortable vibes she sent off crashed against him like brutal waves. This was something he did often- pestering random strangers, trying to feed them company even if they didn't really care for it- so he knew how to read the signs, and according to his calculations, she wasn't too pleased to have him crouched in front of her and peaking at her papers.
Since he did do this quite a bit, he was fairly aware that having her at unease did not lead to a good time. The conversation would die, she'd toss him untrusting glares, and silently plead for him to leave. So right from the bat, he'd offer her an out, showing a hint of that kindness he keeps under lock and key.
"Hey," his voice was softest it'd been through their short interaction, head tilted down to catch her eyes, "If you don't want me to bother you, just say so. It won't hurt my feelings, I'll get outta your hair." The smile on his lips was placating, trying to calm her uncertainty and pacify her nerves. It was only fun to pester and taunt if the person responded equally, otherwise it was trying to make a rock laugh.
It just wasn't fun.
"Ashton, by the way."
