Well, there went his knees. They wobbled and he nearly fell over as her laugh swam into his ears, flooding him with the sudden heat of pure joy. He made her laugh, score. Things were already looking up- even if he didn't understand the sudden turn of events, but he was grateful for it nonetheless. Now all he had to do was keep the mood light and stay on her good side. That meant no more talk of Gen and definitely no more mentioning Mr. I-slept-with-the-woman-you-love-in-Mexico. Screw him, he sucks.
Shaking his head to clear his head, he nibbled on his lip to try to keep his grin at bay. God, they were bipolar. Up, down. These people must think they're nuts. Focus, Sam- jeez, she's finally on his side and all he can do his babble mental. This guy, no hope at all.
Eyes squinted as he tilted his head back to glance at the sun, he shoved his hands into the pockets of his jeans and shrugged. There was still a lot of daylight to kill, and what better way than following Natalia like a lost puppy around Beacon Hills? Composing himself- so he was neither a self-conscious mess nor a bundle of anger- Sam gave her a shy smile and simply responded with, "I can walk. Lead the way."
He never was the best at making decisions- unless it came to heated arguments with his father. In that case he was a spitball of hate, ready to fight till his lights were knocked out. Simply put- Sam would pick one steady personality trait to follow when his eyes remained one color rather than current kaleidoscope of blues and greens and yellows. And yeah, that'd probably never happen.
Allowing his grin to broaden, he tore one hand out of its hidey-hole and gestured towards the sidewalk, ushering her playfully to make a choice on which direction.

The ball was in Natalia's hand now, her choice of where to go, her choice of what to do. She had the power and that, if you hadn't figured, was just how she liked it. Taking a gentle stroll out of town seemed like a good idea to her although there was the matter of her car being here. Oh well, maybe she'd make Rose go and fetch it for her later, seemed like a fair enough punishment for her sister playing the same song - loudly - about 50 times in a row.
As Sam moved his hand, Natalia couldn't help but say, "I thought your hand was reaching out to hold mine then." A look of complete and other casualness was on her face as if the fact wasn't something she wanted to be true. "Alright, lets go." She said after a moment voice sounding as if she had an actual route in mind although she didn't in reality.
Heading left down the path and up a gentle slope, Natalia recalled the last time she'd just been on a walk. It had been in Mexico after she'd found her pack and had, to her surprise, been welcomed back, she'd felt relieved, she was no longer alone. If it wasn't for her siblings she'd be there now, lounging on half broken furniture watching locals walk past, oblivious to the fact that the group sat inside could all reveal claws and fangs. Part of her longed for that life, it seemed simple. This here with Sam was far from simple and the fact that he didn't know what she was wasn't helping matters either.
Forcing herself to pay attention, Natalia glanced up at Sam quickly, wondering what to say. She came up with nothing so just decided to wait until Sam would begin to blabber.

Oh god. She shouldn't have said that. Sweat began to pool at the dip of his spine, concealed by layer after layer of clothing, but there nonetheless. His palms were clammy, an anxious laugh breaking off his suddenly parched lips. Is it hot out here, or is it just him? Seriously, he isn't like this around anyone else. At all. Sam oozes confidence, has since he hit his growth spurt and put his father in his place. He knew he was attractive, knew he was smart, and knew that he gave off charismatic vibes. Sam knew who he was, and how to act- just not around Natalia. Any other girl, and he'd have them on their knees with a flash of dimples and a shy glance under his bangs. He won a lot of people over with his boyish demeanor, his innocent looks dulling all uncertainty they may have to his physique. A big puppy- playful and wise and comforting, but with this one, singular female? He didn't know what he way. A bumbling mess, shaking hands and twitchy looks. She stole his confidence, stashed it in her pocket and left him grasping for some recognition on how to act. He was aware he should play it cool, that a girl like herself wouldn't be impressed with his stuttered phrases and shield of hair, but he can't.
He's tried.
It's just something about her, the lack of knowing where they stand, and god awful crush on the girl that leaves the six foot something man a puny teenage boy all over again.
Coughing out his anxiety into the his fist, Sam shook his head once to clear the thoughts and set himself straight- don't let her get in his head, and he'd be golden. He needs take control of himself and stop letting Natalia play with his emotions. But he already knows he's setting himself up to fail- he's a collared dog, and she holds the leash in a firm grip.
Keeping pace with her easily, Sam studied the silence. It was a calm one, though her gaze kept batting his way every now and then. It was nice, safe even- and of course he had to go in shatter it with the question that had nagging him since they'd reunited. "So," he says sturdily, head tilting her way as they marched on, set on finding his confidence once again, "Aside from Mexico, what have you been up to?" He had to hide his grimace at the mention of the country, eyes falling to his feet to hide the emotions he knew were welling up in his hazel irises. He was an open book, his thoughts always lingering on his face- it really did shock him that Natalia had yet to catch the awe that was ever present in the press of his lips, in the glow of his eyes whenever she was around. Yet she was clueless to his love, figures.
Fingers fiddling against his thighs, he nibbled on her lips, shyly glancing her way as he awaited an answer.
Some catching up without anger involved was really overdue.

It didn't take long for Sam to start to speak, words pouring out of him like an uncontrollable tap. Better than silence though. Interesting question though, an answer that took Natalia a while to come up with a decent answer to. Sulking couldn't really be classed as a past time, could it? Hmm, maybe it could, Natalia wished it could. Teeth tugging on her lower lip as they turned a corner, Natalia carried on thinking, mulling over what she could say. Of course she could talk about her family, about how her grandmother was on the brink of death and the likelihood of her grandfather dying of a broken heart from it, but that was sad. Now was not the time for sad.
Moving away from death, Natalia considered talking about her siblings, her brother and younger sister, Rose. Actually, Rose would be great to talk about, "well, since my dumb-ass sister practically failed junior year, I've had to help her through summer school. By help I mean telling her to shut up when she starts whining because man does she whine." Natalia always found it easy to talk about Alex or Rose, her choice of words became easy and casual when they were the subject of conversation. She guessed it was because she loved them or maybe it was because she spent most of her life with and around them.
There had to be more though; something else she'd been up to, dealing with her sister's moaning didn't take up all of her time. So what else was there? Man, Natalia really needed to get some hobbies. "I've been reading a lot, I guess. It's distracting." And since Sam hadn't been there, she'd relied on novels to keep her company, something that wouldn't hate her. "So, yourself? Or have you just been at school?" Natalia inquired, finally looking up at him, the sun catching her eyes so she had to look away.

Great. An actual conversation he can roll with, one he can make it through without a stutter and definitely without trying to claw out her throat at. His family was usually a touchy subject, but his siblings? He could ramble for days. They were his safe haven, something he felt confident in. So when she mentioned spending most her time with Rose, a girl he's only seen sparsely at school events when they were younger and heard his own sister mumble about on those rare occasions she spoke about school, he perked up instantly.
This was his chance to fall back into himself and get rid of the mess Natalia makes him into.
A small chuckle lingered on his lips as he grinned, fingers deftly shoving his too long waves behind the ear closest to her, as if to hear her better. Eyes slanting towards her as they continue walking on, he steals a moment to add in, the words easily spilling off his lips- for once. "Sounds like Teddy," an easy smirk curved his lips as he recalled all the nights spent basically doing his brother's homework for him after giving up on the teaching aspect. Theodore just had his head... other places. "Noelle seems to get it all on her own- she's in Honors classes, and all that, but my brother?" Sam huffed out a laugh, shaking his head, "If it doesn't end with a bang, than he doesn't care. Doesn't even try." School had always been far more important to Sam than any of the hunting his father pushed him into, but Teddy fell into his father's lap- eager to please and always obeying. Every order barked at him, every hunt tossed his way- his brother played up the role of the soldier, finding endless amounts of approval there. Shrugging off those memories with a soft sigh, he quirked an eyebrow at her, curious. Really, he would have never pegged Natalia as the 'helpful' and 'reading for fun' type, but that only appealed to him more. That's who he was, after all. The brains of the operation.
Maybe it'd be easy sailing from here on out.
But then of course she had to go and ask that.
Nibbling tentalively on his lower lip, he averted his gaze and tried to scrounge up some details on what he'd done between now and then- and frankly, just proclaiming 'oh, you know, just making my way through a pack of girls trying to get over you' doesn't exactly help him in this situation. With a one-shouldered shrug, Sam dares to glance her way as he tries to nonchalantly reply, "Eh, mainly school. A party or two- you know, living the college life, but really? Nothing really aside from making a few," he paused, searching for the right word, his gaze falling to his feet as he softly concluded, "New friends. Don't really have time for anything anymore aside from studying."
Shrugging once again as if in apology for his poor response, he quickly turns the conversation off of him by asking, "How is Rose? And-what was it- your brother? Alex? Haven't seen him in ages." Family talk, it seemed the safest grounds for the both of them.

"I'd say maybe Teddy and Rose should meet but that might just make her worse." Natalia said with a quick flick of a smile as she met his eyes for a moment before turning back to look ahead of them, lest she walk into a road.Rose didn't care whether something ended with a bang, although it would be a perk, Natalia knew Rose simply cared about saving her own skin most of the time, a trait they shared although Rose did seem to have a heart, most of the time anyway.
Natalia could tell that she'd surprised him and she felt pleased because of that, never going to complain about being mysterious, keeping people on their toes. Something about Sam seemed to shut down with her question, again, why did she have this effect? Or was the real question, did Natalia enjoy it or not? It had its benefits and its drawbacks she guessed. Natalia had been studying him so she noticed his glance, willing it to stay but of course it was gone within moments. Wow, she could really make herself sound like a lovesick puppy if she tried. Ah friends, parties, the things Natalia lacked in her life, not that she was bitter or anything, no, no, Nat was perfectly happy being lonely. Ha, not. Therefore Natalia didn't comment on what he'd been up to, letting it slide and beside Sam had just started asking her about her siblings so it wasn't like she needed to not say anything for long.
"Rose is, well, attached to her boyfriend I suppose you could say aside from that she's fine, still listening to Disney way too much, so nothing much has changed there." Now it's Natalia's time to shrug before turning her thoughts to her twin, hmm, how was Alex? "Yes, Alex. He's busy dating everyone with a pulse, if he's not careful he'll have a baby on his hands and he's not dad material, trust me. Aside from his sleeping around with guys and girls, he decided to learn Latin while we were away and won't stop making comments in the language. It's kind of annoying." Natalia finished there, realising she was probably telling him too much irrelevant information. "So, how are the other young Styles's?"

"No, no," Sam was quick to butt in, shaking his head at her words with slightly widened eyes, "I wouldn't even dream of letting the two together. The world wouldn't be able to handle that mess- and really, Teddy is nothing of a role model. I would know." Horror passed over his features for a moment, though it was more to humor her rather than actual recollection, "Nat, really- one time we dressed up as superheros when we were kids and he convinced me to jump off the shed roof so we could 'fly'. I broke my arm, and had to ride on his front handle bars to the hosptial," he shook his head, allowing a slow laugh to tumble of his lips as he dipped his head down and called up the memory. Despite the harm that was caused, Sam cherised that moment. He and his brother had snuck home early on Halloween when he was eight, Teddy convincing him that this would be better than candy. It wasn't, and he had to endure the added pain his brother's bike going over bumps caused while they raced to the hopsital. His parents were ferious when they were called later, rushing into the room and coddling Sam, but it was okay. The brothers were closer after that. Sighing, Sam spoke around a grin, glancing her way as he concluded, "Teddy was laughing the entire ride there, calling me stupid because I should have known that 'Batman couldn't fly and Superman was clearly superior. Letting her and him get together could quite possibly implode the world." His hair bounced softly as he shook his head again at the thought, biting on his lower lip as he let the fact that he hadn't stuttered once during that whole spiel was over him. He was gaining confidence, and was proud of himself.
For now.
He nodded along with what she was saying, noting her siblings lives and stashing the information away. Sam couldn't stop himself from chuckling at her explanations, despite how accurate they were, they were hilarious. He hadn't know Rose had a boyfriend, never really figured he'd need to know, but was glad that she had someone at least, and he could easily understand where she was coming from when it came to Alex. Theodore was the same way.
And like that, it was his turn to talk again. Great. Uh, what were the other Styles' up to?
Clearing his throat, he let his gaze linger on his surroundings as he spoke, curious as to where this path would lead them. "Well, Teddy has been tossing himself into hunt after hunt- and if not a hunt, a girl. Maybe a guy, not too sure. He kind of has that mindset that sleeping with a guy would make him less masculine and he can't have that, but I've had my doubts that he's as straight as he pegs himself to be." He was babbling again, fantastic. "Uh, Noelle keeps to herself," he couldn't tell her why, wouldn't even dream of outing that secret, "But is heading to college soon, just having trouble picking which one." Tilting his head downwards, a blush painted his cheeks, words soft as he added, "Her and I are kind of the boring ones." Because even though he said he'd gone to parties, it was only a handful and after being pushed and pulled out of his dorm into socializing. He didn't care much for that life, preferring hiding in his room with a book and silence.
Raising his eyes to find hers, he pursed his lips and searched for something to prolong the conversation. The only question coming to his mind being, "How are your parents? Haven't heard about them in a while." Once upon a time their parents had been decent friends, but he hadn't paid too much attention to his mom's babbling to know if they were still close or not.
Plus, this family train of conversation was doing wonders for them.

Natalia listened to his story with an easy smile on her face, quite likely the easiest smile she'd mustered in a long time. This long haired giant just brought out a different side of her, although it did take a lot of effort and she had to applaud him for his efforts. "I suppose you're right, the world doesn't need imploding just yet." Natalia agreed and was it possible that she laughed at that? Because, yes, she did although it faded after a moment, it had been there that was for sure.
She liked his laugh although she wouldn't make jokes to hear it, if he found her funny then that was just a bonus, not many people thought she was funny, usually because she was trying to tell them jokes just before killing them
Eyes on the path for a moment as Natalia stepped around a blob of sticky gum it was another moment before she looked back up at Sam. If you'd told her a few years ago that going on a walk with Sam was desirable, well, she'd have scoffed in your face before offering to drive you to Eichen House, now though, things had changed.
Natalia listened to Sam closely, she'd never really spoken to his brother r sister and wanted to know about them, wanted to know about the kind of people they were. Natalia felt a jolt in her chest when he mentioned Teddy's sex life, it was just like Alex, although she knew for sure that Alex was definitely not straight. Natalia made a sound, to you know, make sure he knew she was listening when he mentioned his sister. Rose had never mentioned her so Natalia had really known much about her. Sam saying she was quiet told her why, Nat's own sister wasn't one for quiet.
Sam's next words made Nat look at him sharply, although she was certain he didn't notice. "You're not, Sam." She said quietly, one hand brushing against his arm quickly. She regretted the action though, afraid it let her feelings be known so instead she prayed that it didn't, for now she was happy keeping him on his toes.
Arms folding over he chest casually, Nat thought on his question. It was true, the Styles' and Harpers' adults had once been close although that friendship had faded over time. Teeth tugging on her lower lip, Natalia wished for some lip balm before reminding herself that she actually needed to answer the question. "They still hunt, although not as much" The reason as to why they'd eased up on the hunting involved a few reasons, a couple of which were to do with her. Glancing up at the sky as a cloud moved over the sun, she wondered about what else ot say. "My mum is quiet, I guess. My dad worries about the state of his parents. In truth, I don't see them much." That last sentence had revealed that Natalia had a weak spot and she knew it a moment too late. Cursing herself for admitting that she didn't really see her parents, Nat stayed silent after that.
It was only until they needed to cross a road that she started to speak again, although it was a question now. "What are you afraid of, Sam?" Head tilted to the side, Natalia waited for the road to clear, sun lighting up the colour in her eyes as she watched both him and the road.

She laughed. Oh god, Sam made her laugh. Not only that, but a real smile too- or at least it looked pretty realistic. It's a miracle- or a trick. Is someone hiding in the bushes with a camera? Ready to jump out at him and tell him it's all just a joke? That Natalia wasting her time on him was all a big rouse? He waited, counted to ten silently before he breathed a slow sigh of relief. For real? He'd gone from making her rage to this? Awesome. He counted that a win. One point to Sam.
No, he silently agreed, the world didn’t quite need imploding just yet. Especially when hope finally started shining along the horizon. Maybe things would be okay with them. Maybe. He really, really wants it to be. Please.
His gaze batted her way every so often, trying to calculate her reaction to his little spiel on his siblings- because if he was honest, talking about his brother’s sex life was just a tad odd when he was trying to coax her back into a friendship, if she wanted nothing more than that. Sam was just masochistic enough to handle being her wing man, watching her chase after other men if she didn’t care for him in that way. As long as he was able to keep her around, that’s all he could wish for- anything more was, realistically speaking, just a fever dream. She’d never truly want him, not someone like him.
Putting his thoughts aside for the moment, he shoved his hands deeper into the pit of his pockets, trying to turn his attention elsewhere. But of course, Natalia has to go and make his heart thump hard in his chest with her next soft words and the briefest of comforting touches. So much for side-tracking his emotions. Now they were racing at full speed, making his cheeks heat up and a shy smile creasing his lips- his dimples deep as craters as he turned his face away to hide his reaction. Big softy, that’s all he is. Six foot four of solid muscle, a purebred killer of things that went bump in the night, and a lawyer in training- and he was easily turned into a fumbling, blushing mess in front of this one girl. God, talk about his Achilles heel. She dug her nails into his chest, clawing back all his armor and turning him to mush. An oversized puppy just seeking any attention she was willing to throw his way. Sam had no idea what he was going to do when Natalia and Gen would inevitably meet, because Genevieve would see right through him, knowing something was off because who he was with Nat just wasn’t him. He couldn’t stress that enough to himself, couldn’t help wondering how his stoic attitude shatters with just one glance from his childhood crush. He didn’t get it, so he rolled with it.
Sam’s head bobbed along with her response to his question, his emotions temporarily under lock and key and his face cooled some as he took in all that she had to say. It made sense, age was a constant struggle when it came to hunters, but with all the fresh faces stalking into town to take reign of the business, well, it made it easier for the elders to lay back and not think twice about it. His kaleidoscope eyes (sometimes blue, a hint of green, a dash of brown when the lights were low, and was that yellow? Geez, just stick to one) locked onto her at her last statement, face twisting in sympathy. He got it. He never saw much of his own, so he could relate. Most of the fault for that laid on him, with going away for college and all, but his dad’s refusal to meet eye to eye with him played a big part in that mess as well. Sam and his father just butt heads, refusing to do anything but yell and avoid each other. Maybe it was just better that way. A frown creased his lips, eyebrows drawn in tight as he replayed the most recent fight of theirs. Not pretty. Shaking his head to get the hurtful feelings out of his system, he made quick work of updating her on his own parents, "Well, mom is still writing books, never was too into hunting. Is sick, but nothing too bad," yet, his mind chimed so helpfully, "Uh, dad and Teddy hunt a lot- don't know when to stop." He shrugged, not really knowing what else to say- and if he was honest, he didn't really want to elaborate any further on the topic of his parents. Noelle and Theodore were one thing, his mother and father were another. Sealing his lips on the subject, he turned his attention away.
And then she had to ask that question.
You.
He bit his tongue, keeping it in and refusing to admit it because she did. She scared him. All that she was capable of making him do- he didn't understand how she did it and was terrified of what she'd get him to spill. Natalia was his biggest fear, but also the thing he loved the most.
Talk about complicated.
Coughing to clear his throat and stir his thoughts, Sam went for his generic (yet honest) answers. "Clowns," he said with a cringe to add effect, "And failure- I guess. Uh, the truth," his voice was hesitant then, mind flickering back to the darkest secret he kept- his sister. He was the only one who knew she was the thing his family was so set on killing and he didn't know how to help- it pained him to know she had to go through this essentially all on her own.
Shaking his head, tossing his untamed hair about, Sam returned the question, gaze curious as he eyed her reaction, "And you? What are you afraid of Natalia?"

Natalia wondered what it was like for people who weren't aware of the supernatural. How simple it must be. Natalia had never known simple from a young age it had always been, 'go running, you need to stay fit.' or 'come here and learn how to use this gun/sword/various weapons that had always felt to heavy as a young girl.' Now she looked at them and only thought of what she'd done - all the innocents she'd killed or had at least had a hand in the death of. It made her feel sick to her stomach. Physically she'd become a monster and mentally she'd followed. With Sam though, Natalia didn't feel like that. She couldn't put her finger on it but she knew, knew that with him she was generally calmer, more happy, she want him around even for that effect on her.
Noting the look of sympathy that had come onto his face, Natalia dipped her head. Sympathy wasn't really needed, that's just how her family were, whether she wanted it to be different or not was irrelevant when Alex and Rose got on fine, no need for Natalia to kick up a fuss at a lack of hugs or bedtime stories.
What was wrong with his mum? Natalia didn't ask, afraid it would either a) make Sam cry or b) be something horrible or, you know, c) both of the above. "Hunting can be addictive. Probably from the adrenaline it causes." Natalia shrugged, she'd been like that, unable to stop had nearly gotten Rose to be like that, too.
Ah, so there was no immediate response to her question. Natalia may have looked into that, that pause a little too much. Did he not have any fears? Were there so many that it was hard to chose? Maybe he was afraid that he'd admit what they were and that she'd laugh, maybe she'd laugh in her head but she did have a heart even if it was buried deep away, so she wouldn't openly laugh if he told her that he had a fear of teddy bears.
Arms slipping down to her sides, Natalia waited patiently not hustling him on although she really did want to. She wanted to know this piece of information so badly. Why? Natalia couldn't say, maybe she just wanted to know if they were afraid of the same things, or at least similar things.
Finally he spoke. Huh, not teddy bears but clowns. When he said that he was afraid of the truth, Natalia felt her stomach drop, her face stilled as she just focused on the word. Truth, she feared that so much. Feared her downfall because of it.
"Uh, me..." Was it possible that Natalia didn't know what to say. Yes, yes it was, she wasn't a superhero who always had the right answer. She wasn't a hero point blank. If this were a fairy tale, well, Natalia would be the big bad villain who never gets to redeem themselves before the dashing savior kills them. That's when she knows what her biggest fear is and ironically, she isn't afraid to admit it. "Death- I'm terrified of dying." Nat looked down at the ground, not wanting to see what Sam thought of that. The road cleared then and Natalia began to cross it, knowing Sam would follow sooner or later. "I guess I'm also not a big fan of the truth either." It would be so easy to tell him then but still she stayed silent.

Samuel was silently grateful that Natalia didn’t press for any information on his mother’s condition- not that it was exceptionally horrendous, she was most likely going to make it, but because it hurt to even think about the alternative. What if she didn’t? What if it was worse than they thought? It wasn’t as deadly as cancer, but it still threatened their household, the chance of death forever looming overhead. Not only that, but then he’d have to bring up Genevieve again, considering the girl had really only come over to keep an eye on his mother- even though he suspected other agendas which he’d rather not even think about, let alone address, with Natalia not even a foot away. Coughing softly to clear his throat and stir his thoughts, Sam pushed his fingers through his hair to knock the strands out of his face, tucking a few behind his ears as he directed his attention to the girl once again as she began to speak.
He was more than a little curious, interest peaking as her voice caught and stuttered. Was she unsure? Sam didn’t think he’d ever seen her off her game like this, if you overlook the fact that their last interaction consisted of him holding her as she wept- but they don’t talk about that. Feelings are a no-go for them. Hush on the emotions, lock and key the heart. That’s why didn’t get anywhere, always shifting, but never committing to the leap.
His eyebrows drew in close as his gaze caught on her face, reading everything he could there as he took in her words. Maybe he’d expected a joke- something to mock him for actually thinking he was worthy of this knowledge, but there was no such thing. Not even a teasing tone- just an uneasy, unsureness as she kept her eyes off him and muttered off the one thing that hadn’t even crossed his mind. Death. Of course that’s what she would be afraid of, wasn’t everyone dreading their final days? How come he hadn’t even thought of that? His features twisted then, confusion and something close to thoughtfulness painting his face as he too glared at the grass beneath their feet.
He felt the need to comment, to not let her words go unheard- because this was a big step in their relationship. Trust, and he couldn’t just drop the ball now that his tongue suddenly lost connection with his brain. Oh so wisely, he mumbled, “Uh.” Great start, go Sam. Clearing his throat, he followed a little more sturdily, “Well, that’s understandable. Isn’t everyone? Deeds left undone and all that?” He bit his lip, eyes batting her way for just a moment before he directed his attention to his surroundings- so few clouds in the sky, it was beautiful, calm. “Personally, I suppose, I’m not all that scared. I wouldn’t say I fear death, just kind of accept it?” He knew his end would come someday, and was content in his mind that what he’d done thus far was enough to rest on. He became his own man, chose his own path- his story would be one of perseverance if you turned a blind eye to how shy and unconfident he occasionally was. So no, he wasn’t terrified of dying, but he understood how she could be- he wouldn’t really expect anything else. She had a drive to live, to conquer- Natalia would never be ready to go.
Gaze batting up just in time to check both ways, Sam put a little pep in his step as he raced to keep up with her- just barely catching the tail end of her words as they met on the other side. Biting his lip, Sam knew he was maybe pushing it, but he spoke softly, eyes drifted somewhere just ahead of them, “Well, uh, maybe we should- we could, I don’t know, face our fear? Maybe tell a truth? Not now- but sometime, I don’t know.” His shoulders bobbed in a shrug, head tilted downwards and hair shielding his face. The anxiousness was back, welcome home stuttering.
Shaking his head, Sam was eager to move on from the subject, lips moving before he could even process them, “So, are we just walking aimlessly, or do you have a destination in mind?”

It wasn't the deeds undone that bothered Natalia. The opposite was what she worried about, that she'd never be able to redeem herself or make amends with those she hurt. She knew that it was most likely that the people she had caused harm to wouldn't want to hear her apologies but at least if she could say sorry, she'd feel better. Then again, Natalia wasn't too willing to give up her sorrys yet. "How can you accept it?" Natalia sputtered, she was amazed; coming from herself where self preservation was priority number one, accepting her end was something she doubted she'd ever do. Looking at Sam in amazement - maybe it was more surprise actually - Natalia shook her head before looking away.
After she'd crossed the road, Natalia slowed again to fall into step with Sam. Then again, with his long legs he probably didn't need her assistance. Oh. Oh, oh, oh. Okay, how did Natalia answer that? Wouldn't that be the perfect opportunity to tell him the truth about her, then again it felt like so much pressure and she hadn't even agreed to it yet. Nat took a moment to decide; quite a long moment really. "Okay," she said finally without feeling the need to elaborate on why she'd taken so long to decide; it was a big commitment, for her at least. Since even if she didn't tell him she was the very thing they hunted, she'd have to tell him something- but what?
Running a hand over her neck to push out some of the tension growing there, Natalia's lips quirked up slightly at when Sam said next. Good question. Where was she headed? Taking a moment to look up and around at where they were, Natalia thought on it for a moment. Nope, she had no idea. "I must admit, I have no plan which is rare." Nat admitted, glancing up at Samsquatch which of course she called him in her head on occasion, more of a pet name really. Wow, since when was Natalia the type to have pets names for people. "Want to go to the park, we can ,I don't know, feed the ducks or something." Okay, so apparently she had just said that.

With a shrug, Sam cast his gaze downward and twiddled his thumbs, fingers searching for something to do rather than tearing at his shirt’s frayed ends constantly. It’d be ruined by the end of the day if he kept that up. His voice was soft, slightly unsure when it came to answering a question she clearly wouldn’t understand his answer too. He knew Natalia was all gung-ho about self-preservation, it was just how she was, so of course she’d be shocked that Sam was totally content with the idea of passing on. Hazel eyes locked on the passing gravel crunching underneath the soles of his shoes, he let his shoulders bob once again as if to prove that he was truly content with the idea as he spoke, “I mean, isn’t it better that I accept it now than put up a pointless fight later on? I’m not saying I want to die any time soon,” no, that really was not in his plans, “It’s just, in the end we all die. We don’t know when, and we don’t know how, so I’d kind of rather let myself be content nonetheless. I don’t know. I guess if I let myself accept it now, then I’ll be able to go peacefully- I don’t know, it’s stupid.” He rushed out his last words, feeling uncomfortable in his own skin and unsure of his own outlook on life after her scrutiny. It wasn’t something he’d ever be able to properly put into words, and something he’d never expect her of all people to really understand. His hands were clammy, and he shoved them into his pockets to hide some of their squirming- best she didn’t know how truly out of place he felt at her side.
This was one of those valleys on this never ending rollercoaster they seemed to be stuck on, trapped in a dip as they fumble over what to do and say.
He dared to glance at her after she’d finally spoken up, the long pause having been pushing him closer and closer to a heart attack as he waited anxiously. Of course she wouldn’t share anything, that much was obvious- he hadn’t figured she would. Not unless it was on her terms, after she’d had time to go over every possible reaction and deemed it worth the risk. So he simply nodded, eyes falling back to the ground as he hunched forward some- he’d always hated his height. It made him stick out when all he wanted to do was blend in, so he’d taken to curling in on himself, doing his best to make himself small and less noteworthy. He nibbled on his lip for a moment before nodding again, seemingly coming to terms that she meant she would- not now, but eventually she would tell him the truth. What that truth was, though, he’d couldn’t even fathom. “Okay,” his voice was soft, eyes cutting her way as he offered up a shy grin from under his unruly fringe.
Sam would just have to take what he could get.
A soft laugh spilled of his lips as he straightened up some, fingers working at his hair to shove it behind his ear so he could catch her eye. He had never really pegged Nat as the duck feeding time, but it was oddly comforting to think that she’d be capable of doing something so.. sweet. “Yeah,” his voice was tinted with a hint of awe, dimples dug deep in his cheeks as he grinned, “Yeah, I’d like that. Though,” he glanced around for a moment, fingers twitching in his pockets, “I have any bread hiding anywhere.” Glancing back her way, he couldn’t keep the smile off his lips, eyes sparkling with joy.
Seems they’ve reached a hill on this relentless coaster.

Natalia didn't think it was stupid as a car whizzed past them, some snotty kid staring at the pair of them with a pair of green sunglasses on, that was stupid. Honestly sunglasses were so hard to get right and well, he wasn't acing it. Also don't tell Natalia not to think this was about a child because she'll turn her vengeance right onto you. "I guess in the back of my mind, I always thought I would die young. Not much point in coming to peace with that, I get your logic though, no matter how skewed it might be." Natalia shrugged before the words on the edge of her mind itched to come out, "can't argue with a lawyer, can I?"
Feet hitting the pavement at a continual rhythm this was the thing Natalia liked about walking, there was a pace to it, you could go fast or slow and your feet were still there, guiding you along. Still, with Sam her feet were possibly the only thing guiding her here, she couldn't listen to her heart because that was reckless and her brain was... also reckless. So that apparently left her feet.
Gah, them with their okays. You'd think they were bloody Gus and Hazel. And yes, Natalia had seen that film ever she had let out a tear or two. Casting her gaze towards him, Natalia's heart softened - nay, melted at the site of that smile. Seriously around Sam, Natalia Kills was not the soundtrack to her life, in fact it was way more Taylor Swift than she would have liked.
Crossing her arms over her chest and then immediately uncrossing them so that they could fall to her sides, Sam rising back up to his full height made her feel short- again. Sam's smile, his laugh, well it made her smile back before her head dipped towards the ground. She was still trying to seem tough, to seem like Mrs. Made-of-Steel-and- Walls after all. "Where's Hansel and Gretel when you need 'em, hey?" Natalia quipped back, looking back up at him. She had this childish notion within her to give him a playful shove but that she did quell. "Pretty sure there's a 7 Eleven right by the park, we'll pick up some duck food there." If they were going to go to the park then they'd need to turn left at the next turning which happened to be now, grabbing Sam's arm, Nat pulled him in the right direction, the action more instinct that anything.

A frown curled unpleasantly on Sam’s lips at Natalia’s words. Dying young? Uh, how about no. He didn’t know what he’d have done if he’d come home to find her laying six feet under. He didn’t want to talk about it, this death topic, any longer. He didn’t care if she did or didn’t really understand why he was okay with it, Sam just didn’t want to walk down this path any longer. Best to change the topic, but then her comment about him being a lawyer filled his ears, and he couldn’t help but hear a hint of a demeaning tone to it- whether she’d meant for it to sound that way or not. He knew most people didn’t settle well with the topic, lawyers being categorized at the bad guy or a nuisance more times than not. Desk dwellers and wannabe cops- some of the things people threw his way didn’t even make sense, and he never let them deter him. He wanted to make a difference the only way he knew how, legally, of course, and this had always seemed like the only path for him- aside from throwing himself into the line of fire as a police officer, and god no, he was way too clumsy to be trusted with a gun in the name of the law. Hunting the supernatural was different than stopping a perpetrator. It had never bothered him, and he knew that this was his path, but at Natalia’s teasing words, well, he felt as though maybe this wasn’t the best idea. Weird, she hadn’t actually said anything wrong and Sam was just acting like a teenager girl, but he couldn’t muster up more than a small smile and mutter out half-heartedly, “Yeah, guess not.”
Why was he like this? Stop PMSing and get your head in the game, Sam.
One foot in front of the other was the only thing keeping him steady, and even that wasn’t much, he’d managed to stumble slightly over a tiny crack in the pavement. Steadying himself, he glanced her way with a shy smile- almost wanting to make an excuse for his clumsiness, dang mile long legs he’d never gotten used to, but he settled on a blush to tell his tale. His smile only grew with hers, even if he could only see a hint of it as she let her head fall some. Sam couldn’t quite quell the laughter that bubbled up at her Hansel and Gretel comment, head shaking slightly as his chuckles faded enough for him to add, “And here I was certain you were going to offer up stealing bread from someone’s picnic basket,” his tone was light, eyes bright as he turned to face her more, all his moping from before long gone. Before he’d even gotten the chance to speak, the words just on the tip of his tongue, her petite hand latched onto his arm and steered him in the right direction- and being six foot plus, that was no easy feat. Glancing down at her hand, Sam fought back the blush and all of his boyish emotions to reply in a steady voice, “Alright, 7-Eleven it is.”
