Ezra was minding his own business in the cafe, trying desperately to re-energize himself with as much caffeine as he possibly could. Sleep was thing of the past apparently and while it meant that he got a lot done, it also meant that he'd been falling asleep at work. He was already on his second warning, so one more quick nap or argument with the boss and he'd be fired, which wouldn't really be a bad thing considering he hated his job. The only thing holding him to the job was so he didn't disappoint his dad, his sister had always been the family disappointment, not him. After their mum had died and they moved to Beacon Hills when he was sixteen, Ezra remained the quiet one whilst his younger sister went off the rails because she couldn't cope with the grief. She'd calmed down as she got older, aside from her drinking problem that is. The only problem Ezra had really was his apparent insomnia, which was consequently starting to lead to a cycle of problems.
It was his day off and he'd decided to go for a coffee and possibly meet up with Ellie. He hadn't seen her for a while so a catch up was necessary. As he sat down with his drink, he saw her come through the door and smiled as he took off his jacket.

Ellie was happy to be getting a call from Ezra. She hadn't told him everything. She hadn't mentioned her brother or why she was home from school earlier than she should be. She was planning on telling him now. Ellie noticed Ezra and walked up to him. She gave him a huge hug. "I've missed you so much," Ellie said with a smile. "But be right back while I order," She said.
She walked up to the counter and ordered her usual drink. She then sat down again and looked at Ezra. "Sooo What've you been up to?" Ellie asked.

Ezra stood to hug his friend, his arms pulling her shoulders towards him as they both smiled. Nodding, he sat back down and kept his eyes on her while she ordered, glancing back only to empty a sachet of brown sugar into his drink and mix it in. When she sat down opposite him, he rested his elbows on the table and looked around the room before sighing. "What have I been up to? Honestly, nothing. Just work, really. And visiting my dad. Last week would have been my mum's birthday, so we both stayed with him for the weekend." He laughed and he scratched just above his top lip, remembering the weekend. "He and my sister got in an argument again, which was expected so I've been trying to kind of like, mediate between them." Shaking his head, he took a sip of his coffee which was still much too hot, leading to him burning the end of his tongue and setting his drink down so quickly he almost spilled it everywhere. "Pretend you didn't see that." He grinned. "What about you? You came back early, is everything okay?"

Ellie laughed at Ezra nearly spilling his drink. "I can't unsee what I just saw," Ellie said teasingly. She sighed and shrugged at Ezra. "Family problems."
"My brother was diagnosed with cancer and they just found out it was terminal, " She said quietly. She hadn't told Ezra any of this because she felt like it was more of a family thing. Now she just wanted to tell Ezra.

Ezra opened his mouth to speak but realised his attempt was futile and abruptly shut it before looking down at his drink. What could he even say to that? A simple 'I'm sorry' just wouldn't cut it and if it was terminal, was their any use in trying to remain optimistic? There was no way to make the situation any better or any easier, he knew that Ellie and her brother were close and even if they hated each other it would be just as hard. Instead of speaking, Ezra reached out and took hold of her hand, letting them both rest on the table's surface. He glanced up at her and smiled, his eyes showing his sympathy while words failed him.
After a moment, he pulled back his hand after squeezing hers and let out a breath. "I'm really sorry, Ellie. If there's anything I can do..." He shook his head as his voice faded away. There probably wasn't anything he could do, it wasn't like he could cure him immediately, but he wanted Ellie to know that he was there for her. He always would be.

Ellie sighed she always refused to cry. "There's not much you can do." Ellie ran a hand through her hair. She didn't really know what to say. She felt like she made it all awkward.
"So what're you doing today? Have a girlfriend yet?" Ellie teased because it was valentine's day. She normally had a boyfriend. This was her first year in awhile that she didn't.

Ezra just smiled again, fingernails scratching at the edge of the wooden table between them. It was awkward now, and he could tell Ellie blamed herself for making it that way, but he didn't blame her. Cancer made it awkward, not Ellie. As the conversation shifted after a few minutes, he laughed, bringing his hand up to scratch just under his jaw. "Today? I have no plans, really. And girlfriend? No." He raised an eyebrow as he glanced back up at her. He'd broken up with his previous girlfriend six months ago, and since then he'd had one or two hook ups, he couldn't really remember, but nothing serious ever came of it. But it was Ellie he was curious about. She usually had a boyfriend on Valentine's Day, and yet there she was drinking coffee with him. Surely if she had a boyfriend, she'd be out with him. "What about you?" He asked, leaning on his arms that were crossed over on the table.

Ellie shook her head and shrugged. "I haven't dated anyone since I went to juilliard. It takes up too much of my time. Most guys want a girl as much as they can and we'll I normally get barely enough to eat and sleep. I don't really have time for a relationship, " Ellie said.
The other reason was how focused she was on he'd family. That was all her spare time was going. She took a sip of coffee and glanced over at Ezra. "Would yoy want to do something? " Ellie asked.

Ezra glanced up at her, he knew better than anyone how time consuming it was looking after a family member with a terminal illness. His mum's heart failure was a prime example of that so he understood. He raised his coffee to his lips, about to take a sip, but then Ellie spoke. "Sure." He said, nodding before finishing off his coffee. He wiped at his lips with a napkin he'd grabbed and then asked, "What would you like to do? It's on me."

Ellie shrugged,"No idea, " She said. She stood up and threw her coffee away. At some point she finished it. "We could totally go see 50 shades of porn," Ellie teased. Ellie ' s mom was seeing that and she had no idea why. So was her friends from school. Ellie was never interested in all that.
"Ooo! We should have a superhero marathon! " Ellie exclaimed. If there was one thing Ellie loved it was Marvel superheros. She grinned at Ezra.

"See it? I thought you were in it!" Ezra teased, picking up the empty sachet and throwing it at her, laughing when it landed on her lap. He crossed his arms over his chest, letting his head roll back as he sighed. "Still with the superhero stuff?" He laughed, glancing back at her. "Didn't Juilliard change you at all? It's Saturday, we should go out."

Ellie crossed her arms looking fake offended. "Taht was beyond rude," She teased. "I think I shall sit right here until you accept my love for captain america," Ellie teasingly said. Ellie had never been to a party. She was always too busy doing other things. She had straight As and she was popular and she was in every single play as the lead. She have times for parties.

Glancing around, Ezra realised there weren't many customers in the cafe and most of the employees were huddling in the corner watching and laughing at a video on one of their phones. He got up and threw the to-go cup of coffee in the nearest bin and on his way back to the table knelt down in front of Ellie, hands clasped together in front of him. "Ellie Wilde, I apologise profoundly but I simply do not, and never will, accept your love for Captain America." He burst out laughing, getting to his feet. "What I do accept, however," He held out his hand for Ellie to take. "is that you could do with a night out, and hell, I definitely need one." Ezra had never exactly been a party animal to the extent his sister or his friends had been, but he knew how to have a good time. Throughout high school, he'd been friends with a couple of guys who played on different sports teams and so he was usually invited to them. He always used to ask Ellie to go with him, but for some reason or another, she was always busy.

Ellie laughed at Ezra. She took Ezra ' s and raised an eyebrow at him. "How exactly is a party remotely fun. The last party I went to was my cousin's and she thew up on me," Ellie said with a smirk. Ellie never saw the appeal of parties. They always looked stupid to her. That was probably why she was considered the good child.

Ezra held onto Ellie's hand, half leading and half pulling her out of the cafe and down the street. As they walked, he couldn't help but laugh. "It will be fun, I promise! And I won't throw up on you - I'll try not to anyway." Stopping suddenly, he turned to Ellie and pulled a sad face. " Please!" He said, dragging the word out. "It won't be fun without you."
