Chest expanding in front of her; in out, in out. Inhale, exhale, don't stop, Rose, don't stop. It was rare that Rose felt herself on the other end of the knife but fear gripped her throat, it was impossible to calm herself, to steady her heartbeat in the way she'd been trained to. No, this was serious, someone, an alpha demanding for her sister was here. It must be him, it must be the one who bit her; who ruined her sister, ruined their family. Instead of running, Rose knew she should be turning and fighting but she couldn't. No part of her small frame had ever felt this scared, not even when she was younger and would hear her siblings fighting outside beneath her bedroom window, tearing each other apart, not even when Liam had had cancer and Rose had been terrified that she'd lose her friend to that, no this was fear on steroids.
The pounding of feet came from behind her and Rose shot a look backwards, trying to see what he looked like. Why was he here? Why now? Rose knew one thing she wasn't going to let the alpha get his hands on her sister again, not when he'd already destroyed her life enough. Throwing her weight to the ground, Rose rolled to a stop by a tree, to look up into the tree above her and see someone sheltered there. Who was that? It certainly wasn't the alpha, no, he was fast approaching but he was not in the tree.
The question was, did Rose say something or did she just hope that the other person could sort themselves out. No, despite the fact that these days she wasn't too great at making decisions, she knew when to help, "hey, you, in the tree, are you okay?" Rose called, trying to keep her voice as low as possible.
