It was still early in the year, February 23rd. Lottie and Tyler were just chilling at home together, watching films, chatting and just killing time before their mum got home. A normal evening in the Bennett house. Their dad was currently working abroad, he worked in IT so he got to travel around a lot, but she didn't really mind, because he always came back with cool things and photos of different countries that she hoped to visit one day. So, at the moment it was just Lottie, Tyler and their mum still in Beacon Hills, but little did they know that was going to change soon.
The siblings had just finished watching Mean Girls for the billionth time, since it was Tyler favourite film and Lottie enjoyed it too- because who didn't like Mean Girls? She'd never met anyone who hadn't found it at least slight amusing and she was pretty sure. But now they didn't have anything to do, so Tyler was channel surfing, flipping between the various program while Lottie fiddled with her phone, texting one of her friends and trying to ignore an uneasy feeling that had come over her suddenly. She wasn't sure why, but when Cady had snapped her crown it was like something in Lottie had snapped, and since then she just felt wrong. She didn't know why.
She realised that Tyler had seemed to of stopped flicking between channels and had paused on the local news, something they never watched. Raising an eyebrow over at him she lent for the remote so she could change the TV to something else, but he snatched it away and told her to look. The scene on the news was one of chaos. There were two crumpled cars, news reporters and people everywhere. Still she wasn't sure why he was focusing on it, it was only a car crash, they weren't uncommon, but then they repeated the name that had probably got Tyler's attention.
Emily Bennett.
She didn't pick much out of sentence, just that her mum's name had been mentioned in a report featuring a car crash. She could see where it was from the TV, and before she knew what she was doing she was getting her shoes on, a grim determination to find out that her mum was okay, or at least alive. "We need to go there" She told Tyler, knowing he'd end up going along with her even if he didn't want to. Slipping on her coat quickly she turned around to see him doing the same, and she tried to offer him a smile but she was far to worried for that.
Before she knew it they were at the scene, battling through the crowd of people that still surrounded the cars. It was more shocking seeing it with her own eyes, and there was an atmosphere surrounding them and telling them that someone was extremely close to death. They managed to talk to some people, so when the rest of the crowd was dispersed they were aloud to stay, sitting on the curb a bit away from everything that was going on. They sat shoulder to shoulder, just being there together was soothing them. She didn’t know how long they sat there, her fiddling nonstop with her fingers just for something to do, before she got that same feeling from earlier, but this time it was even worse, and made her want to scream at the top of her lungs. She didn’t scream, but somehow she knew that their mum had gone, and it was the most horrible knowledge she’d ever had to bear.
She didn’t burst into tears like she thought she would, but instead went limp against Tylers side. She was numb, and it felt like ice had shot right through her core, freezing her.
It was about 2 minutes after this that a kind woman came over and tried to break the news that she already knew to them softly, but it didn’t matter how softly she tried to say it, it didn’t change the fact that they no longer ad a mum.
