AU: It's been ten years since their fallout. Ten years of pitiful attempts at moving on and pushing forward. Ten years of denial and loneliness and heartbreak. Ashton hadn't thought he'd ever see Jade again. He'd given up on the idea a long time ago and settled in to life as alpha alone. Jade counted it as a miracle if she went a week without something reminding her of Ashton, her mood souring the moment the memory creeps in. Ten years and somehow Ashton found himself at her doorstep, a loft in New York City's heart that was all too easy to find with a little help from Google. He'd never been North before and hadn't left Texas since he'd gone back, but he needed help and he didn't know who else to turn to. A sickness was ravaging his pack, something the supernatural couldn't overcome and he couldn't stomach standing still and watching his people die any longer. Jade and her family hadn't been just hunters, but scientists. Erin had explained to him once that they studied the supernatural after they were killed to try to understand them and Ashton was just pulling at a thin string of hope, desperate that despite everything, maybe Jade could be the answer.
He knows in reality he just wanted to see her one last time before he died. It was okay to lie to himself, he thought, coughing heartily and wiping the blood from his palm onto his dark jeans. It's been a few days like this now. Most only lasted a week after the first symptoms showed. He was paler now, the skin dark around his eyes and his body lethargic. Still, he knocked. Jade answered the door after a few moments of rustling behind the door. Ashton's enhanced senses had been failing him, dulling into whispers the longer he was sick.
When Jade opened the door, her curious smile faltered, confusion washing into rage as recognition settled in. Ten years and so much and yet so little had changed. She was just as beautiful as that last day he saw her, if not more.
"Ashton?! What are you doing here? You can't just—you can't just show up after ten years and you—you can't be here! I can't believe you'd—"
"I need you," he interrupted, too tired and too hurt to drag this out. He knew she was justified in her anger, but he didn't have enough time left to make it up to her or to hear her out. If she could heal him, he'd give her the rest of his days begging on his knees for forgiveness. Part of him wondered even if she could heal him, would she?
Jade fell silent, stunned by the raspiness of his voice, finally taking a good look at him and realizing he was sick. "Something's happening to my pack—making us sick and I didn't know who else to go to." Her lips quivered and her eyes fell shut, briefly pushing her rage aside to soak in the information. The supernatural falling ill was something so foreign, something unheard of. Her stomach was in knots, trapping the butterflies that had erupted deep in her belly. He sought out her of all people. Now wasn't the time to dive into what that could mean. "You don't owe me a damn thing, Jade, but I—we need you." He watched her with desperation and hope, knowing she had every right to tell him no but praying she'd say yes.
When she opened her eyes, she had to look away, unable to face the sorrow she found in his. Could she do this? Could she even offer him help? Would she? Ashton looked away, accepting his fate and finding peace that he had seen her one final time. He missed the flare of her nostrils and the press of her lips, determination flashing in her eyes as she looked back at him. "I can't promise anything, Ashton," she said softly, a hardness to her voice that had his heart breaking as he stared down at her, "But I—I'll try. Just, come in. Don't touch anything." She stepped back and gestured him to the couch. He settled in, taking in the decor of the home and soaking in the relief that had washed over him at her words.
"Thank you," he said in a hushed voice, coughing into his hand and wincing at the pain. Jade's own face went white at the sight of crimson on his fingers, swallowing hard as she asked him to explain the symptoms and when it started and how his pack was dying.
Later they could address the past, but right now, they were fighting for a future.
