Lia just stood there in the middle of the fire. She tried to stop it but she couldn't. Everyone she tried to get a word out they spoke of her. Eventually she followed Preston out. "Preston wait!" Lia called out. She ran up to him. "Hey Preston. Pierce he didn't mean that - he's just upset," Lia said. Lia didn't wnat arguing going on bit she knew that it was impossible to not apparently.

Pierce watched Lia run out, and then he just took a deep breath and sat back down next to Mason. Taking his hand again, he leaned his head on the wall and watched Mason sleep. "You better be okay," he whispered to himself. --- Preston walked down the hallway, obviously angry. He heard Lia running after him, and he spun around when she said he didn't mean it. "Yeah, sure. He didn't mean to tell me that I'm a terrible and horrible human being. Because it's not like I've put up with him for seventeen years or anything. He has no right to say anything. Anything." Preston wasn't actually mad at Lia, he was just angry. He hated that someone would make assumptions about him when they didn't even know the start of it.

"But look at it from where he's from. He left a house that always judged him. And it's not like you don't openly judge Mason," Lia said. "I know you love him and I know you care for him. But sometimes you just take it too far," Lia said. She was trying to be sensitive to Preston ' s feelings. "And he doesn't know you so he had no right to say that either. It just got out of hand Preston." Lia insisted. Lia hated arguing.

Preston ran his hand through his hair and sighed, trying to calm himself down. "I'm trying, Lia," he said. "I just want Mason to get somewhere, you know?" Of all of the kids in their family, Mason was the one that Preston worried about the most. Nate was going to MIT, Lia was probably the most talented person that Preston had ever met, but Mason didn't have any plan for a future that Preston knew about anyways.

"But he's not Preston," Lia said. She didn't like to admit to snooping but she couldn't help it. "Well I saw a letter in the mail for a college and it's not for Nate and it's not for me," Lia said. "Mason took it and Mason opened it. If Mason wasn't making the right choices then he wouldn't have applied," Lia said. "He's not a failure. He's really smart. He just doesn't like to show it. "

Preston looked at Lia, confused. "I didn't know that," he said, suddenly feeling guilty. Preston felt bad for saying the things he had to Mason a few days ago about being worthless. He looked down at the floor awkwardly.

"I'm not supposed to either and I dint think he wants to go," Lia said. "But that's not your choice and you need to just relax because all I've realized is we've nearly lost him twice and yet we still treat him like he's a disgrace," Lia said quietly.

"Why wouldn't he want to go? That's a great opportunity," Preston said, basically disregarding what Lia had said about relaxing. "Mom and Dad might just kill him if he decides not to." Preston didn't understand why anyone wouldn't go to college, but that was just his state of mind.

"This isn't about mom and dad! This is about Mason and what Mason wants. You don't get to choose his future for him. You may be his guardian but he's still his own person," Lia said. She was getting annoyed now. "I'm sorry Preston but I completely disagree with you deciding what's best for him. I wouldn't let you do that for me."

"I'm not trying to decide for him, but it would be stupid for him to get accepted into college and not go," he said with a shrug. Preston was opinionated, and he didn't waver on his opinions. He was raised in a house that believed that not going to college meant that you would struggle for the rest of your life. "And frankly, if Mason had it his way he'd just sit around on his ass smoking pot all day."

"Yeah totally Preston that's why he doesn't smoke anymore. If he didn't want to try he wouldn't write all the time and you know it." Lia just shook her head. "I sorry I'm just tired of this," Lia said
--
Mason suddenly woke up to a nightmare. He wss hyperventilating before before he realized he was in the hospital and it was just a bed dream. That's all it was. He had been restless in his sleep and kicked the sheets off.

"Whatever, Lia," Preston said, obviously annoyed again. "I have to go pick up Hope." Preston then just turned on his heels and walked away. He hated when people told him that he was wrong. It was part of what made him a good lawyer because he always found a way to prove that he was right. --- Pierce noticed Mason kicking in his sleep and he leaned over to shake him slightly to wake him up. "Hey, it's only a dream. You're okay," he whispered to him, trying to calm him down.
