Understanding Jasper was something that Skylar had spent years trying to do, but she would always end up concluding that it was impossible. His mind was just a dark and mangled void that she couldn't even begin to figure out. But she wasn't going to give up on trying to. If anyone was going to break through to him. she wanted to be sure that it was her. "I want to help you," Skylar said as she walked in front of him so she could get a clear look at his face. She hadn't even noticed that he was crying until she saw the tears streaming down his face. "But I don't know how. I believe in you, and you know that. I know that there's so much more to you that you think there is. We just have to find it." A still shaky hand reached up to touch Jasper's cheek, gently wiping away his tears. Skylar had only ever seen the boy cry maybe two or three times ever. It took a lot to make him cry, or at least to cry in front of anyone. That scared Sky, but only because she was afraid that Jasper was going to break down to a point that she couldn't get him back.

Jasper didn't know what to say, or how to say it. There were too many words he'd left unsaid over the years - too many secrets he'd kept the lid tight on until he'd had a few too many to drink, and the secrets came spilling out faster than he could down the beer in his hand. He was a mess of words and thoughts he couldn't quite articulate without welcoming feelings he'd convinced himself he didn't have and, even if his blood turned to pure liquor, he'd never even dare to let slip. He was too afraid, and probably always would be. Oh well. At least if he was afraid, he could still remind himself what it was like to be human. Brushing his head away from Sky's shaky hands, he made an extra effort to look at where they were stood, alcohol dazed mind slowly dragging up foggy memories of he and Trick playing there when they were little, back before things got complicated. It was a nice time back then. It was all so simple... When the hell did everything get so hard?
"What if there's not?" he asked quietly, finally turning to look at her again, wet eyes now tearless as he forced himself to not cry, knowing that the only reason he could switch it off so fast was because of a worrying amount of practice. "What if this is who I am, Sky?" There was a pause, and he shook his head, taking yet another step away from her as he slowly began to shut down, some part of his mind deciding that it didn't want to deal with everything going on in his head, and so just deciding it didn't care anymore... Maybe if he stopped caring, Skylar would stop trying to help. He didn't want help - there was nothing wrong with him. "What would you do if you realised that all I am is the dickish bravado everyone else knows, and that, despite the fact you still believe there's a part of me you can help, all I'm ever going to be is the jackass that killed your own dad in front of your eyes."

"So what if you are?" Skylar said, honestly trying to help Jasper as much as she possibly could. "Who you are right now is the same person that I've loved for years now. Sure, you're an ass, but who isn't? You kill people and say that you feel nothing about it, but what you're feeling right now proves otherwise. So maybe you'll always be selfish and rude because that's just who you are. But you don't have to be a bad person because that's a choice. You just have to make the right one." Sky wasn't even completely sure what she was saying at this point, she just really wanted to convince Jasper that he could be whoever it was that he wanted to be as long as he knew what that was. She'd never give up on him, and that was certain.
"And even if everything else falls apart, you know that nothing you could possibly do will make you lose me, okay?" she said. It was a big promise, but it was one that she was absolutely positive that she could keep. Maybe it was a stupid decision, but Skylar was hopelessly in love with Jasper and she was pretty sure that she always would be. If their feelings weren't mutual, the least she could do was be a good friend.
